DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have claimed infielder Isan Diaz off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.

Diaz was optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

To create space on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher Zach Logue was designated for assignment.

It’s possible that Diaz could be recalled to Detroit on Tuesday when shortstop Javier Baez goes on the bereavement list to attend his grandfather’s funeral.

Diaz, 27, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second round in 2014. The native of Puerto Rico attended high school in Springfield, Mass.

Diaz was a part of two big trades. He was sent to the Milwaukee Brewers in January 2016 as part of the Jean Segura deal. Two years later, he went to the Marlins as part of the package for Christian Yelich.

He was purchased by the Giants in April.

Diaz has gone just 1-for-19 in the big leagues this year. In 522 career plate appearances, he’s hitting .179 with nine home runs.

A left-handed hitter, Diaz has played exclusively second and third base in the big leagues, although he has extensive minor-league experience at shortstop.

Logue, 27, has had two brief stints with the Tigers in 2023, allowing nine runs in 11 innings. He’s struck out 10 and walked two. He’s 3-7 with a 6.22 over 63 2/3 innings with Toledo.

Logue pitched in 14 games (10 starts) for the Oakland Athletics in 2022, posting a 6.79 ERA while striking out 42 and walking 20 in 57 innings. The Ohio native was a ninth-round pick out of the University of Kentucky by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2017.

Logue was one of several players claimed on waivers by the Tigers this winter. He stayed in the organization after being passed through waivers a second time by the Tigers.

Because he has been previously outrighted, Logue has the right to elect free agency if he clears waivers this week.
