The National Rifle Association has elected Pete Brownell, CEO of Montezuma-based firearms supplier Brownells, as its new board president.
The NRA elected Brownell on May 1 after its annual meeting in Atlanta.
Bob Brownell, Pete's grandfather, started the company - which sells firearms and shooting accessories - in 1939. It opened a new retail store and distribution center in Grinell along Interstate 80 last year.
Pete Brownell first joined the NRA board in 2010, according to a statement.
'I'm a proud NRA member from day one who grew up with a passion for guns, our rich hunting heritage and a passion to strengthen our Second Amendment,” he said in the statement.
Wayne LaPierre was re-elected as the NRA's executive vice president at the May meeting.
The last Iowan to serve as president of the NRA was Kayne Robinson, a former deputy Des Moines Police chief, in the early 2000s, Radio Iowa reported.
