Joseph J. Roberto, a former architect for New York University, died of a heart attack yesterday at his home in Manhattan. He was 79 years old.
He worked as the N.Y.U. staff architect from 1960 to 1978, when he became a consultant.
Mr. Roberto was a volunteer restoration consultant for the Old Merchant's House, a 19th-century Greenwich Village row house at 29 East Fourth Street that has been preserved with its original furnishings.
Surviving are two sisters, Claire, of Miami, and Alice Estridge of Belmar, N.J., and Miami, and a brother, Anthony, of Middletown, N.Y.
