Jennifer Lopez Interpolates Alton Ellis Classic In New Song ‘Can’t Get Enough’

Jennifer Lopez is set to release a new single, Can’t Get Enough, which creatively interpolates lyrics and melody from I’m Still In Love With You, a 1967 classic by the “Godfather of Rocksteady” Alton Ellis, which was later reinterpreted by Sean Paul and Sasha in their 2002 song of the same name.

Lopez took to Instagram on Tuesday and teased what appeared to be visuals for the new track, writing in the caption: “I luv that shhh…”

Set for release on January 10, the song will be the lead single from her ninth studio album, This Is Me…Now, her first in nearly a decade.  The album will be released on February 16 under her new recording and publishing partnership with BMG, according to Billboard.

Interestingly, Can’t Get Enough was the song Lopez performed at her wedding to Ben Affleck in 2022. The couple’s romance, which began in 2002, experienced a pause of nearly two decades before they rekindled in 2021.

This Is Me…Now, which is a play on the title of Lopez’s third studio album, This Is Me… Then, will also include a song called Dear Ben Pt. II—presumably a sequel to her 2002 song Dear Ben.

As for Alton Ellis, his original song inspired multiple adaptations over the years, including Marcia Aitken’s I’m Still In Love With You Boy and Trinity’s Three Piece Suit, both released in 1977 for producer Joe Gibbs.   

Althea & Donna’s Uptown Top Ranking came later that year, reaching No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. It was certified Silver in the country after selling over 200,000 units.

Alton’s sister, Hortense Ellis, also recorded a version of the song.

Sean Paul and Sasha’s take on the tune followed in 2002, appearing on his multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning Dutty Rock album.

Produced by Steely & Clevie, it reached No. 6 in the United Kingdom and No. 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also became a top-10 hit in Hungary, Italy, Ireland, and Switzerland. In 2021, the song picked up a silver certificate in the United Kingdom. The song’s music video has over 400 million views on YouTube.

Alton Ellis, who was awarded the Order of Distinction in 2004, died of cancer in 2008 in London at age 70.  

His other popular songs include What Does It Take (To Win Your Love), Rock Steady, Blackman’s World, and You’ve Made Me So Very Happy, which was featured in Adidas’ Remember The Why campaign last year.
