Tenergy 05

Our Top 10 Favorite Rubbers (2021 Edition)

...

No. 1: Tenergy 05

Perhaps everyone is asking here, why is T05 ranked in front of D05? T05 is easier to bring high spin under small and medium power, and in the backhand position, it is obviously more friendly to high-level amateurs. Why "high-level" amateurs? Because those whose level is relatively average may feel that T05 FX is more comfortable, or even that Vega Asia has better control.

T05 is suitable for both forehand and backhand. The backhand position is more stable than the T80 currently used by Dark Horse, and it is easier to spin, and the power is also higher.

Compared with German rubbers, its strong advantage lies in consistent quality control. Some German rubbers will change the formula [TL's note: Baracuda and Acuda]. A brand-new T05 is delicate and powerful in performance. The catch? The topsheet scratches easily.

No. 2: Tibhar 1Q

This piece of rubber has likely been discontinued. (sigh) In 2012, I participated in the City Unicom Cup for the first time, not long after switching from Hurricane 3 to 1Q. I was in a good state and easily reached the semifinal. It made me realize that a grippy rubber that bites the ball well may actually make your performance more stable. Because you will not be bound by the feel and performance of Hurricane 3 that has become stiff after extended use.

However, the sales volume of the Evolution series is obviously better. Officials believe that 1Q is not a product for the plastic ball era, and is a bit out of date. But in the end, it is the similar pricing and sales that are not as good as the Evolution that seal its fate. In the past 10 years, the forehand of Dark Horse-kun was mainly 1Q and T05. Until two years ago, I found out the 1Q that were still available on the market were really short-lived. (I guess they had been on the shelf for a long time) After playing for a month, the built-in energy [TL's note: built-in tension] had dropped significantly, so I embraced T05 again.

I am still looking forward to a clear [TL's note: as in feedback], high-speed, powerful, and ball-biting German rubber. Even if it is exactly the same as the original version, as long as the built-in energy can last for three months, it will be really good.

No. 7: Evolution MX-P

What's the best affordable alternative to the T05? Undoubtedly the MX-P. Very close spin and speed. Some users even think that MX-P is more powerful than T05. But the shortcoming is that the topsheet gets scratched easily, and the built-in energy lasts only a month. After the built-in energy is almost expended, it is difficult to use. Short lifespan isn't an issue for pros, though. Boll changes every time he trains, Mizutani changes every day, and Ishikawa changes every three days. In my opinion, as long as you change frequently, the level of MX-P is actually quite high.

Weekly Table Tennis Observation 151: 3 Affordable German Alternatives to T05

...

Evolution MX-P has always been regarded as the flagship model of German porous sponge rubbers. In the European bundesliga, aside from Butterfly Tenergy and Dignics, the Evolution series should be the most used. The most popular models should be MX-P, EL-P and MX-S.

Compared with T05, Evolution MX-P is very close in all aspects, and some models even exceed it in terms of power. Therefore, it is totally fine to replace T05 with MX-P without considering the lifespan. Many years ago, Tibhar took the lead in launching the national player-level grippy rubber "National Evolution", which can be said to be the first of its kind. National Evolution, which was the first to go on the market at the time, was sold with booster applied. When using it, there is a kind of "from soft to hard", where the topsheet is soft, but the sponge is quite firm. So the overall feedback is very solid.

However, National Evolution has a problem. After a month of use, the topsheet will start to slip. This situation reminds Dark Horse-kun of some second-hand T05s from the national team. Although the condition is very new, the topsheet began to slip soon after. The reason had to do with the booster migrating to the topsheet.

The current market version of MX-P is very powerful when brand-new. The price is also very attractive. However, there is also the issue of so-so lifespan. It's not slipping per se, rather, it's the sponge that weakens after a month or two. There is still a clear gap between this and T05. The built-in energy of T05's sponge lasts for a long time, but the topsheet is very easy to scratch.

The Butterfly Dignics series is different. Although the topsheet is also prone to scratching, the friction is still sufficient afterwards. Generally, half a year is no problem. This is the biggest difference between Dignics and Tenergy.

An important reason for the popularity of Evolution among European bundesliga players is that the performance of brand-new Evolution is almost the same as that of T05, and players only need to use it for a "short time". Butterfly’s contract players actually replace with a brand-new one every 2 or 3 days, and Boll is even more extreme, replacing it with a new one every time he trains.
