What is the point of items?

I played a game with my two sons.   We found several items that said, "If you have this item and a certain keyword is on a card, and the card tells you to select a certain card you can select the card 1 higher."

Then when we found cards with the keyword the card one higher was never even in the deck.   This happened with three separate items, this happened on the badlands scenario 3.   I also watched a guy play desert scenario "Genesis" on youtube and the same thing kept happening to him.  

So what is the point of these cards then?   Does anyone else have this problem.

The 1 card higher refers to the drawn card with the keyword in it.  So if the card you draw is number 50 and it has the appropriate keyword that lets you draw 1 higher, you instead would put 50 back in the deck and draw the card 51 and resolve that instead.

Kanooshka is right.  Read the example for that rule in the rulebook.  It will show that you modify your current card drawn.  Not the destination card.
