She won the 1968 Manitoba Women’s championship as third for Mabel Mitchell and the 1975 Manitoba Mixed title as third for Larry Taylor. In 1985, she skipped the team that won the Manitoba Senior Women’s championship Mabel Mitchell had won the previous two years.

During and after her competitive curling career, Shirley Bray recognized a responsibility to give back to the sport. She became a dedicated volunteer worker and leader of curling. In addition to serving as a club and championship events volunteer in Brandon, Shirley Bray served on the executive of the Manitoba Ladies Curling Association, including a term as President in 1980-81.

Recognizing the need for competitive level curling to have more formal officiating, Bray helped establish officiating programs. She was one of the first Manitoba officials, assisted in the development of the formal Canadian Curling Association offi ciating training programs and served as a volunteer on-ice official at national and provincial level championships over a 30 year period.

However, Bray’s most significant role as a Builder of the Sport of Curling was in the area of training and instruction. She played an innovator role in the development of the Curl Canada instructional program and served as the Manitoba Curling Association’s Westman Curl Canada Coordinator for much of the same 30-year period.

As Curl Canada Coordinator, Bray was responsible for training sessions designed to develop coaches and instructors, for conducting skills clinics designed to teach the game of curling at a wide range of skill levels, from basic to advanced, and for conducting numerous clinics and training session with Junior curlers throughout the Westman region. She was a Builder of the Sport at the most fundamental level, having been responsible for teaching both the skills and the love of the game to hundreds (or more likely thousands) or young people.

As well as teaching the skills of the sport, she helped many teams prepare for competition by serving as coach of Assiniboine College’s curling teams and many other teams representing Westman at local, regional and provincial levels.

Shirley Bray was inducted into the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame as a Curler/Builder in 1989.
