About Californians for Academic Freedom
The organization "Californians for Academic Freedom" is the owner of the
domain name
loyalty.org, which contains pages
in opposition to the California loyalty oath.
Californians for Academic Freedom may some day, if necessary, circulate
a petition to
qualify a ballot
initiative eliminating the loyalty oath for
California education workers.
If you want to be a part of Californians for Academic Freedom, you should
join the trace-the-effects mailing list, by writing to
trace-the-effects-request@loyalty.org.
About the logo
The Californians for Academic Freedom logo uses the words "Academic Freedom"
as they appear hand-written in pen in a copy of George R. Stewart's
The Year of the Oath actually used by the Committee on Academic
Freedom at Berkeley in 1950. (This copy may be found in the UC Berkeley
Moffitt Library under the call
number LD736.5S7.)
A scanned version of the original inscription from which this image was
derived is available here; the inscription
reads "Univ. Commitee on Academic Freedom. Berkeley, 1950." This text
was written by an unknown member of that Committee during the
original oath controversy.
