Materials:

Terry Cloth Kitchen Towel

Worsted weight yarn (cotton or acrylic): Approx. 1 oz.

Crochet Hook Size 1 (2.75 mm) steel

Crochet Hook Size G (4.50 mm)

Button (if using button finish)

Skill Level: Beginners Challenge

PREPARATION: Simplest method is to simply fold towel in half, working on folded edge. You may also cut towel in half: fold over cut edge 1/4", or use fray-check/seam sealant, or machine stitch to prevent fraying. Working along prepared edge using size 1 steel hook, poke hk 1/4" from edge through towel, yo and pull lp through, yo and pull through both lps on hk. Work loosely! Space stitches approx. 1/4" apart-you need to end up with an odd number of stitches. Change to a G hk.

ROW 1: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), turn, sk st at base of ch, *dc in next st; BOBBLE STITCH: working around post of dc just made, (yo and insert hk around post, yo and pull up a lp) 5 times (work evenly down dc), yo and pull through all 11 lps on hk, insert hk in next st, pull up a lp, ch 1, yo and pull through remaining 2 lps on hk. Rep from * across row, end with a bobble st.

ROW 2: Ch 2, turn, *dc in top of next bobble st; yo, insert hk in sp before next bobble st, yo and pull lp up, yo and pull through 2 lps on hk, yo, insert hk in sp after same bobble st, yo and pull lp up, yo and pull through 2 lps on hk, yo and pull through remaining three lps on hk -- dec made. Rep from * across row, ending with a dc in top of previous row's ch 3.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 3 or 4 bobble sts left.

NEXT ROW: ch 3, turn *dc in top of next bobble st, dc in st after bobble st; repeat from * across row-you should have 6 or 8 dc, counting first ch 3 as a dc. Finish using one of the two methods below:

TIE FINISH: *Ch 41, sl st in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch back to topper*, sl st in each st across top of topper, repeat between * *, sl st in side of last row on topper to secure and fasten off.

BUTTON FINISH: Work even in dc on 6 or 8 sts, counting ch 3 as dc, until "tongue" is approx. 6" long. Fasten off. Sew a button to base of "tongue", fold over and fasten using center sp between last row's dc's as a buttonhole.
