Russia has much to learn from EC

MOSCOW
FLEDGLING democracies like Russia have a lot to learn from India’s experience in holding multiparty elections, the biggest democratic exercise in the world, says Russia’s chief election officer.

Moscow is closely studying the Indian experience in conducting elections for its Parliament and state legislatures, said Alexander Vesnyakov, chairman of the central election commission of Russia.

"The Indian experience in holding democratic elections could be of use to us," he said.

Vesnyakov was in New Delhi to participate in the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Indian Election Commission, held on January 17 and 18, on the invitation of Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill.

The prospects of cooperation between the election commissions of the two countries were discussed during meetings with Gill and the Indian law minister, Vesnyakov told the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

The two sides discussed the possibility of signing a bilateral protocol for exchange of information and experience between the election commissions for perfecting electoral laws, said Vesnyakov. — IANS
