Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement has a commitment to Long Island--to develop and grow the community. Our path is through the cultivation of young minds and hearts via the Junior Achievement school program. These programs are taught by business professionals from the community who take time during the day to work with children. We are a not-for-profit organization that effects the quality of children's lives by preparing them to enter the workforce with skills, confidence and foundation necessary to thrive. The JA programs not only positively effect children, but schools, communities and industry on Long Island and all over the world.

DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN LIVING HOME FOREVER?
The Long Island Works Coalition is dedicated to bringing together parents, educators, businesses and students to ensure our students have the preparation skills they need and career options to be successful in an ever-changing world. Parents are the best teachers of their children, and this presentation will look at trends in the workplace and ways to prepare children for their future. How do we prepare them? The Long Island Works Coalition is offering free parent seminars to parents of children in kindergarten through grade 12. These seminars will be offered to PTA's, public libraries, and during lunchtime at businesses. The parent presentations can be customized to any audience and are flexible in length of time, averaging 20 minutes to an hour. Help Teach Young Consumers Financial Survival
TFCU is co-sponsoring a National Endowment for Financial Education high school program and we're making materials available free to any school district. Following is an article that will run in our July newsletter, which goes to 100,000 members. No one would recommend that a new driver get behind the wheel without training. The responsibility of operating a car and the consequences of making a mistake are too great. Yet, we put money in the hands of children and teenagers without guidance about how to use it responsibly and how to maintain control. Consider these U.S. figures: The average 12- to 18-year-old has an estimated $50 a week to spend. Only half of youths aged 16 to 22 save money regularly. The average credit union member between the ages of 18 and 24 carries $3,300 in credit card debt. More than one million American adults filed for bankruptcy in 1999. Now credit unions are helping attack the problem of youthful financial ignorance by sponsoring the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP). The National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) provides HSFPP instructors'manuals and student workbooks as a public service. These free materials comprise a kind of "driver's education" for young consumers. As few as 10 hours of instruction can show teenagers how to set financial goals; make education and career decisions; manage income, spending, saving, credit, and insurance; and develop a personal financial plan. Credit unions have a historical Commitment to promoting thrift among members, and TFCU is no exception. In coming months, we'll be telling teachers how the program can reinforce concepts they're teaching in their math, business, economics, social studies, and consumer science courses. "Many high school teachers would love to use the High School Financial Planning Program to show their students the practical value of what they're studying in school, but many don't feel qualified to teach basic financial planning," says Philip Heckman, director of youth outreach for Credit Union National Association, the national credit union trade association. "Credit union executives with an interest in helping teenagers learn financial survival skills would make excellent team teachers."
