IMDb Movie of the Day
Buoyed by a small cast of fully-realized characters, The Man from Elysian Fields snares its audience with an honest look at life's painful contradictions. Novelist Byron (Andy Garcia) struggles to balance his artistic pursuits with the demands of his everyday life -- in this case, providing for his supportive wife Dena (Julianna Margulies) and their young child. With the concept for his second novel rejected by his publisher, he finds himself contemplating an offer to work for the intriguing Luther Fox (Mick Jagger), a man who maintains a mysteriously nondescript business called Elysian Fields. After much hesitation, Byron accepts Luther's proposal, and, not known by his family, begins his profitable new venture -- working as a male escort for wealthy women. Sounds like the classic late night B-movie plot, you say? Happily, it is not. In a coincidental twist, Byron's first client (Olivia Williams) happens to be the wife of ailing famous author Tobias Alcott (James Coburn), and the two writers form a creative bond to write Alcott's final novel together. The intricate details of the performances given by all of the main actors offer the viewer a feast of flawed, all-too-human characters, their interactions refreshingly believable for their lack of absolutes or extremes. Jagger's performance stands out in particular, as he imbues Luther with a deliciously wicked elegance that contrasts perfectly with Fox's personal failures. Similarly, Colburn's turn as an author in his waning days shines with a robust wisdom rarely seen on the screen these days, a performance made all the more bittersweet by the actor's passing only a month after the film's release. -Heather Campbell
