To contain the newly identified Reaper, the authorities brutally quarantine the country as it succumbs to fear and chaos. The literal walling-off works for three decades – until Reaper violently resurfaces in a major city. An elite group of specialists, including Eden Sinclair (Ms. Mitra), is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary. Shut off from the rest of the world, the unit must battle through a landscape that has become a waking nightmare.

Mr. Hoskins will play Bill Nelson, a career policeman who nominates Eden for the mission and monitors its progress.

Showtime To Develop Bret Easton Ellis Horror Soap Opera ‘THE CANYONS’

Hollywoodreporter.com reports that Showtime is headed for The Canyons, a horror-tinged soap opera being developed by Bret Easton Ellis and Dave Kalstein.

The pay cable network has ordered a script from the project, about a group twenty- and thirtysomethings in Los Angeles. It centers on a 29-year-old magazine editor who escapes his hard-partying New York life by following his best friend and a new girlfriend across the country, only to find himself virtually isolated when his friend is killed in a mysterious accident.

The six main characters -- including an art gallery owner, lawyer, event planner and a closeted bartender -- deal with career and relationship issues. They encounter violent situations and anxieties that are briefly manifested as monsters and other apparitions that may or may not be real.

Despite the surreal touches, Ellis says he doesn't want the series to venture into David Lynch territory. "There are no midgets walking backwards," he said, laughing. "We want something much more naturalistic -- a very realistic soap."

Runtimes For Each ’GRINDHOUSE’ Flick Have Been Set, Interesting New Info.

NYTimes.com reports that the Tarantino/Rodriguez horror project Grindhouse is being billed not as one movie, but two for the price of a single ticket. “Planet Terror,” from Mr. Rodriguez, is 80 minutes long, and tells a story of, well, biochemical terror. Mr. Tarantino’s “Death Proof,” clocking in at 90 minutes, has to do with a murderous stuntman and his car.

*SPOILER ALERT* Also, here is some interesting information regarding both films and how they will try to be similar to the old grindhouse pictures:

And since the old grindhouse films were often missing reels, both filmmakers have purposefully cut out a segment of their movies. “My whole thing is to play with the audience,” said Mr. Tarantino. “I guarantee you, when it pops up ‘Missing Reel,’ the entire theater is going to scream. They might very well be screaming my name: ‘Quentin, you bastard! We hate you!’

“And then the next reel starts, and all of the sudden, people who don’t like each other suddenly like each other now. ‘What happened to that guy?’ The only way to do a missing reel is, it’s got to be something you can’t wait to see.”

THE TOP 100 HORROR FILMS OF ALL-TIME!!

Here we go! We’ve talked about it, we’ve debated how to do it, and now it’s time to begin the monumental process of choosing the Top 100 Greatest Horror Films of All-Time! We felt it was about time that we found out which horror films have had the greatest impact on audiences. With all of the remakes and monotony that plague horror films today, it’s very important that we acknowledge those “classics” that have reminded us why we love this genre so much. But there have been so many great and inventive horror films throughout the years, how could we possibly narrow it down to 100? Well, that’s where you come in.

We need YOU to help us decide which horror films make the final cut. So how do you do that? After much planning and countless discussions, our talented writing staff has come up with the following steps that you will all need to take. These steps that will ultimately decide the Top 100. Let's get on with it.

STEP #1: The Nominees – Click here to view our extensive listing of all the horror films we could possibly think of and find (a special thanks goes out to Filmsandtv.com for having a GREAT database of horror films). These films are the nominees and they are separated into their respective decades. You’re going to need some time to really look them all over because there are many to choose from.

STEP #2: Choosing Films – Once you have gone over the seemingly never-ending list of film candidates, you will then have to compile a list of your own. We ask that you pick your top five favorite films from each decade, putting them in descending order. If you’ve only seen, say, three films from the 1930’s, then pick those and add it to your list. However, if you haven't seen ANY horror films from certain decades, then just avoid them altogether and focus only on the decades that feature movies you have seen.

*NOTE: If one of your favorite films is not on our list, you can still put it in yours and we ask that you please indicate the film’s absence so that we may put it on our list of nominees for others to consider.

STEP #3: Posting Your List – Once you have figured out your final compilation, post it as a "reply" on THE “TOP 100” NOMINEES page. For example:

- Sample Comment -

1920’s – “Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”, “Nosferatu”...
1930’s – “Dracula”, “Frankenstein”, “Freaks”...
1940’s - “The Wolf Man”, “Cat People”...
...and so on

And that’s it! You’re done! We will be conducting this survey for a number of weeks, possibly a month or two at max, just so that we can receive enough votes to make a fair and balanced decision as to what films make the final 100. The top three to five films from each decade will automatically be put on the final list. All others will be tallied and then talked about, by us here at Horror Brain, to find its rightful place on the list.

This is going to be a long, painstakingly arduous task, but we here at Horror Brain are up to the challenge... and we hope that you are, too. This will NOT work if you, the readers, do not post your lists; you will have to post your comments or else there won’t be a Top 100. We hope that you will take the time to really put some thought into this because we are ready to deliver the most comprehensive listing of the greatest horror films of all-time. Let the voting commence!

And reports are coming in that devoted fans of the franchise savvy enough to know the location of the “Halloween” production offices are expressing their disdain over Zombie’s re-imagining. Usually, the genre’s greatest detractors who publicly voice their judgment come in the guise of religious zealots or parenting groups; however, yesterday morning, picketers on Sunset Boulevard wielded signs of protest that proclaimed Zombie was “raping” a classic, along with various other phrases that cried for a halt to the production.

Magnolia Pictures Is Ready To Send Out ‘THE SIGNAL’

Twitchfilm.net reports that Magnolia Pictures have just acquired all rights to new American horror flick The Signal at Sundance and the film - helmed by the trio of David Bruckner, Jacob Gentry, and Dan Bush - and the Sundance synopsis makes this thing sound like an Americanized spin on Japanese techno-horror (i.e. “Ringu” or “One Missed Call”) fused with good ol' fashioned zombies.

If you click on the link above, you can also check out a trailer for the film.

There comes a time in every moviegoer’s life when they must ask themselves one question: “Why am I paying eight bucks for another pointless remake?” I’ve been there and if by some grace of god you haven’t, then you should really look at your taste in cinema. I am not out to insult, but my lord, people, most of these “re-imagining” horror films are simply products with no depth that are aimed at the gore hungry audience. I do enter the theater with an open mind, but I am often extremely let down. So having said all of this, join me as I review the 2007 remake of The Hitcher. (Review in Hi-Def where available)

Synopsis: Basically following the same plot as the original 1986 film, the story revolves around Jim Halsey who picks up a hitchhiker by the name of John Ryder. Only in the remake, Jim has brought along his girlfriend Grace. Things seem to be going alright until Mr. Ryder decides to have a little fun at their expense. Now, the couple must try to survive one of the most dangerous rides of their lives because if they don’t, it could be the last ride they ever take.

Direction: For starters, the film has its share of flaws. The first of the film’s problems comes in the form of characters, themselves. Unlike the first film, which featured a realistic Jim Halsey pit against a more sinister John Ryder, this time around we get this run of the mill teen couple that is about as interesting and believable as the people who come to your wedding just to eat the food. They are extremely annoying and you often can’t wait for the next bad thing to happen to them. This is bad for any film because if you don’t feel for the characters that are in turmoil, then you won’t fear the antagonist nor will you have any feelings towards the film at all. That is why the original film worked so well. In the original, C. Thomas Howell and Rutger Hauer played their parts so well that most of the film’s power comes from their weird and intriguing relationship. You get a lot of character study and depth from it, but here that is nowhere to be seen. Instead, we have seriously dumb down characters.

Something else that really held this flick back was that there were two leads instead of one. The fact that Jim was alone made the film’s 1986 predecessor work. It made it much scarier when it was one lone guy being tormented instead of two. You felt bad for the guy because he was all alone on a road where no one could hear him scream and when he is attacked, you really feel that lonesome feeling. That is completely absent from the remake. Instead, we get a paper thin Jim and his girlfriend who is just there to be eye candy.

Unlike a lot of other remakes that try to follow the original’s story but then attempt to bring something new to the table, director Dave Meyers’ remake basically copied the original film. However, when he began to mimic the original picture, he forgot those things I had mentioned earlier, the things that made the original film work. This makes me really mad. If you’re going to make a picture, then have some kind of purpose for it other than to make money. Here’s a perfect example of what I am talking about: Do you remember Gus Van Sant’s remake of “Psycho” back in 1998? Sadly, I do too and this remake is a lot like that one. In fact, there are entire concepts and bits of word-for-word dialogue that are identical to the 1986 film. Things like the line, “Say I want to die” and the torso hitched to the eighteen-wheeler that is ripped apart. Only unlike the original, which didn’t need to show the actual torso being ripped open to scare us, here we see every gratuitous minute of it. I’ve said time and time again that gore is not a bad thing in films, but if the gore, itself, is not justified then it becomes absolutely pointless. Every bit of the gore in “The Hitcher” is tasteless.

Acting: I am not going to enlighten you all too much about the acting because it definitely wasn’t a strong point for the movie. First, there is Zachary Knighton who plays Jim Halsey. Not only is this guy definitely not C. Thomas Howell, but it’s hard to even call this man a “thespian”. He plays the character with little to no emotional range and the emotions that he does show are often wooden and acted in the most unbelievable of ways.

Then there is Sophia Bush who most well-known for her role of Brook Davis on the hit teen show One Tree Hill. She my be important to the residents of Tree Hill or wherever that show takes place, but here she is simply eye candy. She’s not the worst actor in the film and actually plays an important role in the film’s conclusion but even then it seems that the movie’s ending features her only to get more shots of her body and that’s it.

Lastly, there is John Ryder; the film’s hellish villain. Played by Sean Bean, his character sometimes comes off more as a cheesy action hero than a horror villain and we often end up cheering for him instead of fearing him. Sean Bean, who appeared in all three "Lord of the Rings" films as the character of Boromir and in other films such as 2005’s “Flight Plan” and 2004’s “National Treasure”, doesn’t really play the character all too badly. Much like Knighton is to Howell, Sean Bean is definitely not Rutger Hauer. However, it’s not just because he’s not as sinister as Mr. Hauer, but rather it’s that the film portrays his character in the wrong light. Ok, since now you’re in the know, let us move on the bloody stuff because with “The Hitcher”, there is plenty of it.

Gore and More: Like I said before, the gore is tasteless, but there in enough in the film for any genre buff. The film features gory gunfights, a scene involving a guy bleeding all over the lead actor, and a torso being ripped in half. The effects are good but they come off as too repulsive when that’s all you see for the film’s 84 min. runtime.

The sets and locations are ok but they really never give off that presence of an extra character, which is what separates the good horror films from the bad. They are standard and go along with the film somewhat nicely but ultimately it’s not a bragging point.

DVD Extras: None (new release)

Conclusion: The 2007 remake of “The Hitcher” has little to no qualities to be admired and I would be mad at myself if I didn’t inform you loyal Brain Dead’s that it’s definitely not worth your eight bucks. Instead, go out and see Pan’s Labyrinth from the great Guillermo del Toro.

MPAA Wants Movie Industry To Embrace The NC-17 Rating? It's True!

Variety.com reports that MPAA chairman-CEO Dan Glickman met with indie filmmakers and studio specialty execs Monday at Sundance, declaring he wants the movie biz to embrace the NC-17 rating and thereby provide a place for edgier fare.

He also delivered a gift during the closed-door sesh: The Classification & Ratings Administration has appointed a liaison to help filmmakers with questions about the ratings process.

Indie filmmakers have long felt frustrated by the ratings process, which has been shrouded in mystery. Glickman is trying to relieve some of that angst, saying the credibility of the ratings system is vital to the entire movie biz.

The morning meeting in Park City at the Lodges at Deer Valley officially kicked off Glickman's campaign to make the ratings system more transparent and user-friendly (Daily Variety, Jan. 17).

Ratings had already come up at Sundance, even before Glickman's roundtable with the indie community.

On Sunday, the Weinstein Co. and Lionsgate pacted to pick up "Teeth," a dark comedy about a girl who has teeth in her vagina. Harvey Weinstein said he doesn't want to cut the movie to ensure an R rating. Lionsgate can release an unrated movie since it's not a member studio of the MPAA.

Accompanying Glickman to Park City was Joan Graves, chair of the Classification & Ratings Administration. The National Assn. of Theater Owners (which administers the ratings board with the MPAA) also is a partner in the campaign.

In Park City, some attending the roundtable offered the idea of taking the stigma out of the NC-17 rating, which itself was created to take the stigma out of the X rating. But the NC-17 rating never caught on.

Studio marketing departments quickly encountered trouble when trying to place media buys, since various outlets think an NC-17 film is the same as an X-rated film. Also, exhibs have been reluctant to devote screens to NC-17 films.

PAN'S LABYRINTH - Review

By: Gorefan

It’s finally here: Pan’s Labyrinth! We’ve waited and waited and now it’s upon us. It doesn’t matter how many images you have seen or reviews you have read – including this one – nothing, and we mean nothing, can prepare you for the breathtaking adventure that awaits you inside Pan’s Labyrinth. This film is exactly what has been sorely absent from movies today: creativity. As we continue to drown in a sea of mediocrity, full of uninspired works, Guillermo del Toro’s beautifully stunning adult fantasy serves as a lifesaver, thrown out to us so that we may hold onto hope; hope that more filmmakers will begin making more films like this, which remind us of the true power of cinema. Truly, you will be unable to shake off this film once you have seen it; it will stay with you for days. As a result, you have a film that becomes much more than just a film; it becomes an experience the likes of which we have not seen for a long, long time.

The year is 1944; Spain’s Civil War has been over for a number of years but the fight still wages on as a band of rebels are still fighting the opposition. Young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) is traveling with her pregnant mother Carmen Vidal (Ariadna Gil) to an old mill deep in the woods, which is also serving as a military outpost that is being commanded by her Fascist stepfather, Capitán Vidal (Sergi López), a man hell-bent on stopping the rebels.

It’s not long before Ofelia, a young girl with a passion for reading and fantasy, discovers the hidden ruins of an old Labyrinth behind the mill. Soon, she is visited by a fairy - a bug-like creature that leads her through the old Labyrinth and down deep into its . It is here that she meets Pan, a mythical faun who begins to tell Ofelia of her royal heritage. Giving her the opportunity to fulfill her destiny and prove her worth, Pan explains to her what she must do and how she must obey his words. But can Pan be trusted?

As Ofelia begins to carry out the tasks set forth by Pan, Capitán Vidal is carrying out his militaristic tactics to hunt down the rebels that have sought refuge in the hills surrounding his location. Relentless and determined, Vidal will stop at nothing to rid the land of his enemy, torturing and killing anyone he suspects without thought or remorse.

With a strong will and dedicated heart, Ofelia must overcome countless obstacles to save herself, and her family, from the evils that are lurking around every corner, just waiting to take it all away.

At the helm of Pan’s Labyrinth you have Guillermo del Toro, who is finally getting the recognition he justly deserves. Ever since his great ghost tale, “The Devil’s Backbone", you could tell that del Toro was an extremely talented filmmaker and Pan’s Labyrinth only further showcases that point. Skillfully directed with amazing visual style, it’s impossible not to feel captivated by the sights and sounds that del Toro so meticulously presents us with. This goes hand-in-hand with his superb script that seamlessly blends both the real world and Ofelia’s fantasy world and tells two uniquely fascinating stories that come together by the end.

First there’s the real world, which features an intriguing storyline that involves Capitán Vidal and his merciless attempts to claim victory in a land overcome with bloodshed. Vidal is a monster in every sense of the word. As his pregnant wife goes through labor concerns that threaten her very life, Vidal’s only concern is that of the safety and well-being of his unborn child; his son. Wanting only his offspring alive, so as to bear his name, his lack of concern for his wife’s life is only one of many instances where we see how monstrous this man really is. He even treats Ofelia, his stepdaughter, with such immense hatred and disrespect. This all carries over into his professional life, as we see numerous instances where he kills one rebel after another after another without batting an eye. It also leads into his suspicions that someone within his camp has been acting as a spy, giving information to the rebel fighters. Because of this, Vidal becomes very apprehensive, leading to a complete meltdown and the ultimate act of pure evil.

Then we have Ofelia’s journey into the gothic fantasy world of Pan. It is here where Ofelia learns that she is, in fact, a princess whose father has been desperately searching for her. Pan, himself, then tells Ofelia that she must complete three tasks that, if fulfilled before the moon grows full, will breathe new life back into a dying world and have her seated back at her rightful place by her real father, the King. Each task, however, gets more and more dangerous than the last and Ofelia must follow Pan’s words if she is to succeed. If not, her chance to be a princess will be lost as will the land she so desperately wishes to be a part of.

Ofelia’s journey has her moving in an out of reality; meeting some of the most wildly imaginative creatures the film world has ever seen. Yet, the more time she spends away from her mission, the more things begin to go wrong in the real world. Among other things, she will learn that some rules must never be broken, while others need to be. In the beginning, Ofelia would just go along with whatever her mother would say, with a few exceptions. However, by the end, her pursuits compel her to be more assertive and do what needs to be done, to do the right thing. It’s a phenomenal experience that will captivate you from beginning to end.

When it comes to the acting, every single performance in Pan’s Labyrinth is perfect. Young Ivana Baquero, whose talent is well beyond her years, plays Ofelia wonderfully. She really does a hell of a job going through the range of emotions and pulls them off like a seasoned pro. Equally as good is Sergi López, whose portrayal of the sinister Capitán Vidal is brilliant. His performance will go down as one of the great villains in the annals of film history.

Pan, himself, is played flawlessly by the extremely talented Doug Jones (“Hellboy”). In an age where CGI effects dominate, it is great to see a film use traditional methods to create an original character. A computer-generated image will never be as effective as a real actor in a costume and make-up, giving a real performance. Doug Jones’ performance is simply stellar. Every single movement, every gesture, is just pure talent. In fact, if CGI were to be used in place of Jones’ performance, it would drastically hurt the connection between Pan and Ofelia; it wouldn’t work. All in all, the cast is sensational and deserving of much praise.

As we journey deeper into the wondrous world of Pan’s Labyrinth, we approach the violence. Make no mistake; this film is not for children. Del Toro makes absolutely no attempt – nor should he - to sugarcoat or hide the brutal nature of the situation facing the characters in the film. War is a nasty thing and this film shows the real horrors that come with living in such a turbulent time. Most of the violence comes at the hands of the evil Capitán Vidal. Again, Sergi López plays him to perfection and he is the one who commits a good portion of the horrendous acts that you will see on screen. Whether he is bashing in the face of a suspecting rebel with a bottle or torturing another by some cruel means, his penchant for violence is unrelenting. We are also exposed to some brutal warfare and grisly imagery that will stay with you long after the film ends. However, it’s not so much the violence, itself, that is hard to watch, but rather the build-up. The suspense in this film is, at times, unbearable. Before we see any kind of blood, we sit through some agonizing tension that keeps us on edge until the actual violent act finally knocks us right off.

A masterpiece of modern cinema, Pan’s Labyrinth will leave you in complete and utter awe. From its incredible visual style to the tremendous acting, Guillermo del Toro has crafted an instant classic. It’s beautiful, it’s dark, it’s suspenseful, it’s frightening, it’s heartfelt, it’s sad... it’s without a doubt the best film of not only this year, but of the last decade, and easily one of the most original and imaginative films of all-time. This is a must-see picture that demands, we repeat, demands your attention and if you miss the opportunity to see this film on the big screen, you will be missing out on what is certainly an unforgettably mesmerizing movie experience that will capture audiences for years and decades to come.

"We have someone in mind [to direct]," revealed Wan coyly. "We have someone in mind. And we're working on the script right now. That's pretty much where things are at. Saw IV is a tricky one for me to talk about because everyone wants to know about it, but it's just at such an early stage."
