Annoucing S5Project.org

Welcome to S5project.org. This site is a new community site, dedicated to the S5 Presentation software, originally developed by Eric Meyer. Read more about is origins at Eric’s site.

I’m sure you have some questions, let me preempt them:

Why?

There’s a large number of people who are interested in and use S5. More than one man (Eric) can accomodate. So, I, Ryan King, have volunteered to run this site as a place for the community to collaborate on the project. Eric’s still involved.

It started when I was adding some hacks to S5 for a presenation at XTech. Simon Willison and I spent about 30 minutes and were able add a cool feature. I soon learned that others had made similar hacks, yet there was no venue for us to communicate and share our efforts. After spending a few days hacking on S5, I decided it needed a commuity. Thankfully, Eric is supportive of this effort.

What can I do?

Join the mailing list. I know– yet another mailing list– I promise this one will be worthwhile.

Check out the source code. We’re using Mercurial. Its nice, you’ll like it.

I’ve made a few additions to the latest version published by Eric, I’ll explain more about those changes later. Also, beware- it may not be entirely stable. I haven’t, for example, had a chance to test any of my changes on Windows browsers (this is where you come in- test it!).

Volunteer to do some design work (Kubrick’s nice and all, but…).

What’s next?

I’m going to set up a wiki for documentation and collaboration. There’ll probably also be a bug tracker (I’m leaning towards Trac, but I’m open to suggestions).

I’d love to provide space for sharing themes and other additions to the code base.

I have ideas for the core of the software– bugs to be fixed and featues to add. I’m sure you do too. Sign up for the mailing list and float your ideas.

Everything is open to volunteers at this point, so if you have an idea for the software, come and speak up, we’d love to hear what you have to say.

[…] So, I’ve taken on a new project. Yeah, as if I need to reduce either my sleeping or socializing time any more. […]

Will you add a download page and some demo pages? Will you host a skins repository?

That’s great I used S5 since it’s first announced by Eric and it was so useful to me and I like to share in developing it in return, I’m sorry I don’t have enough knowledge about JS I will not be very useful but I could be useful in CSS and UX.
Thanks for volunteering to make the web a better place.

Is the mailing list working yet? I can’t seem to post to it. I’m looking forward to joining this community!

@ dean- yes, I’m on vacation right now, but I’ll get to it next week.

@eric - apparently not. I guess I should have tested it more thoroughly before leaving for vacation.

Thanks for doing this. My skills are minimal (I do my Library’s simple web page) but I’ll help if I can. Maybe writing instructions?

    S5 has a future

I see the future where Blogging software WordPress and S5: A Simple Standards-Based Slide Show System will be mashed up to form a tool where presentation will have comments and trackbacks and really create a discussion.
