ETFRN News 47/48: Forests and the Millenium Development Goals
The newsletter can be read online or downloaded as PDF.

Millenium Development Goals and forests topic page
Together with
Commission for Development Studies of the Austrian Academy of Scienceswe have set up a topic page on this theme.

Recently published on this theme is the North-South Policy Brief 2005-6: "The Role of Forests in Poverty Alleviation: Dealing with Multiple Millennium Development Goals", by Wageningen UR.

ETFRN NEWS 45/46: Forests, Water and Livelihoods
Forest and water issues have hit the news headlines over the past months. “Down with Trees” became one of the slogans after the release of the DFID report “From the Mountain to the Tap” and the FAO/CIFOR publication “Forests and Floods”.

The balance of public perceptions is swinging back and forth – from exaggerated expectations of what trees and reforestation can achieve we may go to the other extreme of ignoring the positive values of maintaining forested landscapes. Beyond the probably necessary shock effect of ‘debunking myths’, we get valid concerns over not throwing away baby trees with the bathwater. In this newsletter the different positions in this public debate are reflected.

Security, Development and Forest Conflict
The forum on Security, Development, and Forest Conflict was hosted by the International Crisis Group and Fiona Hall MEP in Brussels on 8 and 9 February 2006.
The forum is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the UK Department for International Development (DFID), and the Netherlands Ministry for Foreign Affairs, in partnership with the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN), and ARD, Inc.

International Forest Policy topic page
The GTZ-IWP (International Forest Policy) project and ETFRN have jointly set up a topic page on international forest policy. On this page you will find links to GTZ-IWP background information and publications and ETFRN resources like European capability, the ETFRN News on National Forest Programmes, links to internet resources, training and events. With this topic page GTZ-IWP and ETFRN hope to provide a single point of access for resources on this subject.

Our news from other organisations page features recent news and publications on tropical forests and related subjects. At this moment, you can find news from ELDIS and EUFORIC on this page.

ETFRN creates different fora for information exchange and discussions; the network also gathers data and publishes information on European institutes involved in tropical and subtropical forest research. In addition, ETFRN has a Question and Answer Service. Also available is the full text of the network's publication, ETFRN News and information on jobs.

The network encourages the development of joint research activities between institutions and individuals in Europe and in developing countries. More details on the network under Introduction.

We invite you to use the forms under Add links to add information on jobs, funding, or events to this site.

We welcome additions, comments and suggestions.

Until April 2004, the ETFRN was funded by the Directorate General Research of the European Commission under the INCO (International Cooperation) programme. Currently the ETFRN CU holds several contracts with the UK DFID Forestry Research Programme, and it has a partnership with the National Forest Programme Facility based at the FAO.
