Chris Sampson has been shut down for the rest of the season because of his elbow woes. Sampson, who spent August on the DL, aggravated his elbow in Tuesday's game. The Astros don't think he'll require surgery.

Troy PattonS OutSep 12shoulderOut for the season
Latest News:
Troy Patton will be shut down for the remainder of the season after an MRI showed severe tendinitis in his left biceps. "There's fluid on my biceps tendon, and that's what's causing discomfort throwing," Patton said. "I'm going to come back here Nov. 1 and start a rehab program and get back in shape." Patton should enter spring training with a great chance to make the 2008 rotation.

Alan EmbreeR OutSep 28personalDay-to-day
Latest News:
Alan Embree, who left the team to attend to a family matter, is expected to return to the A's Friday.

Kiko CaleroR OutSep 5shoulderIndefinitely
Latest News:
Kiko Calero (shoulder) is not only worried that his 2007 season is done, but he's concerned that as an arbitration-eligible player, his career with Oakland could be over. "This year for me has been way down," Calero said. "They know when I feel good, I can pitch, and I know they know I've been working hard to try to come back, but I don't know what their plans are. I love it here, the team is like a family and my wife and I love the area." While his season is not officially over, any more discomfort in his shoulder would require the team to shut Calero down.

Travis BuckOFD.L.Aug 20hamstringOut for the season
Latest News:
Travis Buck underwent elbow surgery Monday in a procedure that apparently went very well. Manager Bob Geren said it was a "best-case scenario" as no further damage was uncovered by the operation and Buck should be fully recovered by October.

Mark KotsayOFD.L.Aug 17backOut for the season
Latest News:
Mark Kotsay won't play again in 2007 because of his back issues. We'd say the A's are tanking here, but if they really wanted to improve their draft position, it'd be best if Kotsay was playing center field every day. Oakland owes the soon-to-be 32-year-old $8 million in 2008, but GM Billy Beane needs to try to upvrade in center field anyway. Kotsay may still be adequate when he's 100 percent, but his back issues aren't going away and he's a big liability when he tries to play through injuries.

Eric Chavez3BD.L.Aug 3backOut for the season
Latest News:
Eric Chavez, who underwent surgery on his right labrum a month ago, will have back surgery next week. Let's get it all taken care of now. Chavez is still expected to be ready for spring training.

Bobby CrosbySSD.L.Jul 25handOut for the season
Latest News:
After Oakland transferred him to the 60-day disabled list, Bobby Crosby said he won't play again this season because of bone edema in his left wrist. The fractures in his hand have healed fully, Crosby said; the edema is not related to the breaks but is probably because he had his wrist in one position in a cast for several weeks. He couldn't swing a bat pain-free as a result.

Rich HardenS D.L.Jul 12shoulderOut for the season
Latest News:
Manager Bob Geren said that Rich Harden will head to the instructional league in Phoenix this week to work with minor-league pitching instructor Ron Romanick. "I'd like to get in a little extra work," said Harden. "Whether I get in a game, I don't feel like that's something I have to do. I'm confident I'm healthy, so it's more getting a feel, fine-tuning some things." The A's dropped their season-high sixth straight home game and will finish with a losing record at home for the first time since 1998.

Justin DuchschererR D.L.May 22hipOut for the season

Chris SnellingOFD.L.May 16kneeOut indefinitely

Chris Snelling was scheduled for arthoscopic surgery Tuesday on his injured left knee. There hasn't been any word on his status for the rest of the season, but even if he can return for September, he won't have much of a role in Oakland.

Chris DenorfiaOFD.L.Apr 1elbowOut for the season
Latest News:
Athletics acquired outfielder Chris Denorfia from the Reds for two players to be named and cash. Denorfia, 26, will miss the rest of 2007 following Tommy John surgery, but he should come in real handy in 2008 as a fourth outfielder. The right-handed hitter had lines of .317/.391/.526 and .349/.409/.484 in the minors the last two years. He can play an adequate center field and he's above average in the corners. The Reds thought they didn't need him following Josh Hamilton's emergence, but as long as they're counting on Ken Griffey Jr., they're always going to need quality reserve outfielders.

Shaun MarcumS OutSep 22kneeOut for the season
Latest News:
Shaun Marcum will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee on either Wednesday or Thursday. We still don't now whether baseball plans to meet with him about this, or when any meeting might occur.

B.J. RyanR D.L.Apr 15elbowOut for the season
Latest News:
B.J. Ryan, who underwent Tommy John surgery in May, has begun throwing the ball. "He's throwing from 40 feet," GM J.P. Ricciardi said. "The trainers just want to videotape him and watch how he throws. They think the next step is to get 60 feet. I guess he's right on schedule. He'll go to New York. We'll videotape him again and then he'll go back to rehabbing (at home in Dallas)." It appears as if Ryan is on track to be ready for the start of the 2008 season, but he's still got a long road ahead of him.

Davis RomeroR D.L.Mar 31shoulderOut for the season
Latest News:
Blue Jays transferred LHP Davis Romero from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list. Romero is out for the season with a torn labrum. The move makes room for Jamie Vermilyea on the 40-man roster.

Willy Aybar3BD.L.Mar 30handOut for the season
Latest News:

Ben SheetsS OutSep 18hamstringDay-to-day
Latest News:
While Ben Sheets won't get a start Friday, he said he would be available to throw an inning out of the pen if needed. Sheets still had some soreness in his hamstring while throwing Thursday, but he thinks he can contribute. It's hard to imagine him being any worse than Derrick Turnbow in a setup role.

Tony Graffanino2BD.L.Aug 9kneeOut for the season
Latest News:
Tony Graffanino has had surgery to insert a bone graft in his damaged knee, but will need to wait until Dec. to have surgery to have a new ACL attached. Graffanino won't be healed in time for spring training. He is a free agent after the 2007 season and might not find work until he can prove his knee is completely healthy.

Corey Koskie3BD.L.Apr 1concussionOut for the season
Latest News:
Brewers transferred third baseman Corey Koskie from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Koskie isn't expected back this month as he continues to deal with post-concussion syndrome. Latest News:
Yadier Molina underwent surgery Monday to repair a medial meniscus tear in his right knee. Molina had been playing through a sore knee and would have continued to do so had the Cardinals remained in contention. Since they're not, he'll get it taken care of now. Chris DuncanOFOutSep 20groinOut for the season
Latest News:
Chris Duncan underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a sports hernia and will miss the rest of the season. Duncan, who hit .259/.354/.480 in 375 at-bats, will need to rehab for about 10 weeks. Since the Cardinals will need to spend most of their money on pitching, Duncan figures to open next year as the team's primary left field. He deserves it, bases on his first-half performance.

Jeff Kent2BOutSep 27legDay-to-day
Latest News:
Jeff Kent, whose $9 million option kicked in earlier this month, is uncertain whether he wants to return to the Dodgers next year. "I guarantee you that if I were to make a decision right now, I'd say no - because that's how frustrated I am about not being able to get to the playoffs," he said. "I'm also frustrated at myself because I didn't play good enough to get there. Now I have to go home and look at my wife and my four kids in the face and try to figure out what we all want to do." It seems like the Dodger veterans are truly annoyed with the direction of the team, though they've been largely outplayed by the youngsters whenever the under-27 guys have received the opportunity. If Kent wants out, the Dodgers could simply let Tony Abreu and Chin-Lung Hu battle for a starting job next spring.

Brad SnyderOFD.L.Aug 31thumbOut for the season
Latest News:
Indians recalled outfielder Brad Snyder from Triple-A Buffalo and placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left thumb. MLB has had plenty of opportunities to either tighten or loosen the postseason roster rules, but it's too busy making sure Terry Francona has his uniform on under his pullover during games. As a result, we get ridiculous moves like this. Snyder will be included on the playoff roster the Indians sumbit to the league, simply so that the team can wait until later to decide on who it really wants to carry. Every team does it, so we're not blaming the Indians. It's just a really stupid process that should be easily fixable. Snyder, of course, is glad it hasn't been done yet. Since he'll spend the next month on the DL, he'll collect an extra $60,000 this year. That reason alone should be sufficient for teams to want to fix the process.

What the foot problem is, we're not sure, but it's barely worth noting. Escobar is highly unlikely to ever be healthy or productive enough to contribute as anything more than a fifth outfielder.
