Exeter Remembers the Holocaust

Released 24 January 2005

Exeter City Council is marking Holocaust Memorial Day on Thursday (27 January), by opening up a book of remembrance at the Guildhall.

People will have a chance to sign the book between 10am and 4pm. The Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Hilda Sterry, will be the first to sign the book, which carries a pledge affirming the Council's abhorrence of the atrocities and committing itself to the treatment of all people equally and without discrimination.

Those signing the book will also be able to leave their own messages for the victims of those events over 60 years ago.

Cllr Sterry said: "The memories of those events seem so long ago but are still firmly placed in many people's minds. The Council has joined the rest of the nation in participating in the National Memorial Day since its inception, and has organised special events. Whilst these events have been supported to a limited degree, the Council has decided that a more appropriate way for people to remember would be by opening a book of remembrance whereby their own thoughts and memories can be recorded. I hope the Council will be supported in this by as many residents and visitors to the city as possible."
