Shadowrun (page 1)

09:33 PM, June 11th 2007  |  Review

In my case, the license's history doesn't bear the meanings it normally should (a proper gaming evolution). That's exactly why the barely-launched hybrid-FPS title has portrayed itself as a project unaware of the process' resolution. If I were a tad more drastic, most certainly I wouldn't have blown its last "chance" of attaining failure. Rather quickened by Halo 2 to take an ample Vista tour, I've decided that Shadowrun represents the perfect reason for prolonging my recess. What I didn't know at the time I got my hands on the game is that "perfect" ends up being just an affability (the hope really dies last!).

Shadowrun is an online team-based multiplayer shooter with blood of a distant RPG rushing through its veins, a game which scoffs the audience with an offline training mod in the company of a decently competent A.I., but miles away from representing an appropriate alternative for a mini-single-player campaign. As far as the aspect doesn't pose a problem, allow me to incite your interest with the game structure and stuff. Which "stuff" shall make the difference between the install and uninstall processes. Three game modes, molded after the "little sizzle with much at stake" notion, all of them implying both team running for an artifact with multiple uses (dependant of the chosen game mode): Raid or the "classical" CTF (Capture the Flag), Extraction (a slightly more neutral CTF), and Attrition or deathmatch with a "twist". A common and standardized compilation up to a certain point, after which, the detail profusion takes over.

The apparent penury of game modes hides the quintessence of a simple structure, endowed with conceit and flagrant deficiencies of the QA (Quality Assurance) process. But let's not take the road that would lead us in a place we don't want to end up. There are lots of elements with specific assembling needs, and from this point of view, Shadowrun has managed to reach a praiseworthy level. We can begin with the exertion of keeping the balance between available races and abilities so that the online dispute would acquire a true meaning (notice for more or less... informed shooters). The races (human, dwarf, elf, and troll), as well as the weapons and abilities are subject to a series of choices at the beginning of each round, reason for which the player has the opportunity of constantly improving his in-game condition. Certainly, this aspect can only add time with the shovel.

The premise is not that important, given the fact that the magic aura of the "distant" year 2021 becomes ground for a fierce competition between the two powers of that moment, RNA and Lineage. What do matter are the combat components, also known as weaponry, magic, and tech. Each one can be bought insomuch as either team actions or personal achievements manage to cover the expenses, and I assure you that each of them was designed to satisfy the most various expectations. There's no reason for me to ramble about weapons, because these were left unchanged from a construct state point of view: handgun, SMG (submachine gun), assault rifle, shotgun, minigun, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, grenades and a katana sword whose usage will not only change the view (third-person), but shall also deliver a new meaning for "bloodshed". The magic in Shadowrun splits the "vital essence" (the fuel necessary to cast various spells) between healing abilities (Resurrection, Tree of Life), offensive maneuvers (Gust, Summon), and defensive tactics (Smoke, Strangle, Teleport), selectable via a centered pop-up circular interface. The last component, represented by the so-called techs, is present in order to assure a wide array of ability improvements and to increase the number of choices: Enhanced Vision, Glider (overcoming the obstacles is more facile than "ever"), Anti-Magic Generators (destroying magical objects and emptying other personal "reservoir" of essence represents a priority), Smartlink (accuracy assistance) and Wired Reflexes.
