Cornell senior guard Graham Dow has been named to the 2006-07 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America Men's Basketball Team, becoming the first Cornell men's basketball player to earn first-team honors and the 12th Ivy Leaguer to do so, joining the likes of Bill Bradley, Princeton (1965); Robert Morse, Penn (1971); Paul Anderson, Dartmouth (1984); Darren Brady, Brown (1985); Joe Carrabino, Harvard (1985); Tim Hassett, Dartmouth (1985); Todd Murray, Brown (1985); Jim Turner, Brown (1986); Arne Duncan, Harvard (1987); Kit Mueller, Princeton (1991); and Seamus Lonergan, Dartmouth (1996).
Harvard senior guard Jim Goffredo earned second-team accolades.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Dow, a candidate for a Rhodes Scholarship, has had a tremendous senior season, averaging 5.7 points, 4.1 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals while starting 22 of the team's 26 games. The senior ranks second in the Ivy League in assists, fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.43) and eighth in steals. A 67 percent free throw shooter entering the year, he has connected on 34-of-38 shots (.895) this season.
The team tri-captain ranks third on the school's career steals list (163) and is 10th in career assists with 268.
Off the court, Dow has posted a 3.99 grade point average in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. A two-time Academic All-Ivy selection, he was named one of 25 most influential Cornellians by Cornell Daily Sun earlier this year. He was named to the ESPN The Magazine first-team all-district squad earlier in February.
Goffredo, en economics concentrator, has captained the Harvard team to an 11-win season heading into this weekend’s regular season finales at Cornell and Columbia. The 106th captain of Harvard basketball is currently the team’s leading active scorer.
Currently, he ranks sixth in the Ivy League in scoring (14.4 ppg). One of the league’s top free throw shooters over the past two seasons, Goffredo also ranked first in the league in that category at .888 (86-97). Earlier in the season Goffredo became the 24th player to score 1,000 points in a Harvard uniform.
