Scholarship Information
OVERVIEW ONLY

  • Applicants can apply for only one (1) scholarship
  • Applicants must submit current official transcripts and test scores with application.
  • Late and/or incomplete applications cannot be considered.
  • All essays must be typed double-spaced, using 12 pt. font size
  • Applicants MUST be members of Trinity for at least one year AND submit verification of participation in a Trinity ministry for at least one year.

  • Applicants or family representatives must be present on Scholarship Sunday, June 8, 2008 and register with the Scholarship Ministry in the Chapel no later than 1:15 p.m.
  • Students may reapply for select scholarships as individually described, dependent upon maintenance of a “C” GPA or better

All materials and documents submitted by Trinity United Church of Christ Scholarship applicants, in support of their request for scholarships assistance, becomes the property of Trinity United Church of Christ. The applicants, with their submittal of such material and or documents, acknowledge and grant Trinity United Church of Christ permission to use each such material or documentation in furtherance of its ministry related to awarding such scholarships. Applicants are encouraged not to provide original documents, as these items will not be returned.

Rev. Barbara J. Allen Scholarship “For Such a Time as This!”
For students returning to college after an extended absence. This is a one-year scholarship renewable annually for three (3) years “B” grade average needed for renewable consideration.

  • Must be 35 years or older
  • Must have completed at least one course and registered to continue at an accredited college or university
  • Submit a 300-400 word essay responding to the topic: “My Pursuit of Education and how it will/does affect the Church Family and the African American Community”
  • Verification of Trinity ministry participation of at lease one (1) year
  • When applying for a Renewal Scholarship, please use our renewal application and submit along with your current official transcripts, essay and verification of at least one year participation in Trinity U.C.C. ministry.

Dr. Manford J. Bryd, Jr. Award
For college sophomore to graduate student level. This is a one-year scholarship, renewable annually for three (3) years “B” grade average needed for renewal consideration.

  • 300-500 word essay on The Black Value System
  • Letters of recommendation from:
    1. Your school counselor or advisor and a member of Trinity U.C.C.
    2. Please submit your current official college transcript and a verification of at least one year ministry participation at Trinity U.C.C.

Lucille Ellison/Kathryn Brown Memorial Scholarship
For high school graduates. (Consideration will be given to those students with less than a “B” average)

  • Copy of acceptance letter from the college/university you plan to attend
  • Letters of recommendation from:
    1. An adult member of Trinity U.C.C. and Your teacher or counselor
    2. Submit a copy of your current official high school transcript and verification of participation in a Trinity ministry for at least one year.

William and Retza Gise Family Scholarship
This scholarship is being offered to celebrate exemplary community service by a graduating high school senior with less than a “B” average. The family hopes this recipient will use the funds to buy a computer for college. This is not a renewable scholarship.

  • Official documentation of community service, dates, who, why, when, where, etc.
  • Proof of acceptance to a four-year college or university
  • Letters of recommendation from teacher or counselor and adult member of Trinity
  • Verifying of participation in a ministry at Trinity U.C.C. for at least one year
  • Copy of current official transcript or test scores.

Rupert Graham, Sr. Award
For elementary school graduates

Cheryl Guyton Memorial Scholarship
For high school seniors with a “B” (3.0) average or above and submits an ACT score of 26 or better, or an SAT score of 1260 or better. Copy of official transcript and current test scores.

  • Copy of acceptance letter from college or university you plan to attend
  • Letters of recommendation from:
    1. Your principal or counselor, Director of the community organization(s) in which you serve and verification of Trinity U.C.C. ministry participation of at least one year
    2. Personal statement detailing your personal life goals and objectives also something that interest you along with an activity or program you are involved with(12pt font, double space)

Joseph W. Evans “Struggling Artist” Memorial Award
For artists: (in areas including drawing, painting and photography) grades 9 through college level. Student must have community involvement. Student may reapply for this scholarship, depending upon current grade level.

  • A 250-word essay on artistic interests, goals and aspirations
  • Three (3) examples of your work (will be returned)
  • Letters of recommendation from:
    1. Art teacher, Adult member of Trinity, Verification of Trinity U.C.C. 1year ministry participation
    2. Adult member of a community organization which verifies community activity

Dr. Jeffrey P. Radford Memorial Scholarship
For music majors: undergraduate or graduate level. This scholarship is in honor and recognition of Dr. Radford’s 30 years of consecrated and devoted service at Trinity United Church of Christ, Chicago. It will be used to recognize, encourage and support academic achievement and personal development to the ministry of music in the Christian church.

  • Must provide documentation of honors and extracurricular awards
  • Must participate in the ministry of music at Trinity United Church of Christ
  • Must maintain a “B” (3.0) or better grade average in order to be considered for scholarship renewal

Dwain Phillip Lubin Engineering Scholarship
For African American Male, high school senior, ranking 21 or lower in his class, accepted into a mechanical, electrical or structural engineering undergraduate program, preferably at a Historically Black College or University.

  • Letter of acceptance in a engineering program and Copy of official transcript or test scores
  • Letter of recommendation from teacher or counselor
  • Letter verifying participation in a ministry at Trinity for at least one year
  • 200 word essay addressing the topic: The most interesting thing about the engineering field and why I chose to work in this area

For college student in Culinary Arts/Home Economics

Delores M. Johnson Memorial Award
For second semester or higher students, with at least a 2.5 GPA (C+) in an accredited accounting program.

Marcelle H. Williams Memorial Scholarship
For health care majors whose specialty area requires State of Illinois licensure.

  • Letter verifying ministry participation at Trinity U.C.C. for at least one year

Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. / Deacon Don Moody Scholarship
This scholarship is created for individuals, 18 and older, who have knowledge of the 12-Step Program and desire to further their education and rehabilitation in drug and/or alcoholism. Prospective recipients must commit to give back to the ministry by taking calls that come into the church regarding information on placement or work related to the 12-Step Program. This is a one-year scholarship, renewable annually for three years.

  • Three sealed letters of recommendation written by a teacher, counselor, alderperson or other community leader as to why applicant should be considered for this scholarship.
  • Copy of acceptance letter(s) from college/university applicant plans to attend and current official transcripts
  • 300 word essay/bio addressing:
    1. Yourself and family relating to addiction, Why you should receive this scholarship
    2. Your long-term goals after graduation

Swanegan Memorial Teacher’s Scholarship
For education majors at the undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate level; students may reapply for this scholarship depending upon current educational level.

  • 300 word essay on: “No Child Left Behind: Legislation and Its Impact on African American Children in Urban Education Settings.”
  • Letter of recommendation from your academic advisor or counselor; letter verifying at least one year ministry participation and official current transcript or test scores

Dr. Mary Henderson Wright Scholarship
For graduating female high school seniors majoring in mathematics or education that will honor and recognize the dedicated commitment to Christian beliefs exemplified by the lifetime achievements of Dr. Wright, who was a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

  • 300-word essay addressing: “ What legacy would you like to leave to your family and community
  • Proof of registration in a four-year college and official transcripts or test scores
  • Recommendation letters from teacher, Trinitarian, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. member.
  • Letter verifying participation in an ministry at Trinity for at least one year

For undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate student majoring in journalism, print media, radio/TV production or a related field.

For students enrolled in accredited seminaries. This is a one-year scholarship, renewable annually for three years.

  • 300 word essay expressing how seminary education has enhanced your call to ordained ministry….Current official seminary transcripts
  • Letter of recommendation from your seminary professor/counselor

Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Sr. Scholarship
For students enrolled in an ATS accredited seminary. This is a one-year scholarship, renewable for three years. This scholarship is offered in honor and recognition of the personal development and fidelity to Christian beliefs held by Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Sr. Individuals applying for this scholarship must be active in the community.

  • Must maintain a grade point average of “B” (3.0) or above; copy of official transcript
  • Have a stated goal in pastoral ministry
  • Be active in the ministry of Trinity United Church of Christ; or if doing field placement, must be active in that church
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the pastoral ministry and to the local church
