Adoption of the EU climate package – preventing the best from becoming the enemy of the good
Today the European Parliament (EP) voted in favour of four pieces of climate and energy legislation that were proposed as one ‘package’ on January 23rd by the European Commission. As a whole they will ensure that the EU reduces its emissions with 20-30% by 2020 compared to 1990.

Poznan sees unity behind future climate deal, fails to commit to CO2 target
POZNAN, Poland – Delegates at the UN Climate Change Conference in Poznan have secured work plan to follow at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) talks to take place next year in Copenhagen. They have had less luck with the so-called “two-degree target” – stalling global warming at two degrees Celsius, says Norwegian envoy to the conference Hanne Bjurstrøm.

It just so happened the other night that I had a dream – and I remembered it. It’s an extraordinary event, basically, because for the most part, either I don’t dream at all or I don’t remember what I’ve just dreamt about. Shortly after that, another event occurred, and a truly extraordinary one this time: A bunch of complete strangers chose our city – the city I was born in and where I live, and where my mother and my children live – they chose our city for nothing else than building a new nuclear power plant.

MOSCOW - In 2000 the Russian state organ for dealing with the environment was abolished, and late last month, the Ecological Committee of the Duma was scratched. They actually waited some time before closing the doors.

I know it may sound dubious, but the last time I attended an international summit was also in tropical East Asia, also in December (I did not get any tan then, though, and neither will I get it here in Bali). It was when the World Trade Organization (WTO) held its last ministerial conference in Hong Kong. But those are about the only apparent commonalities between the two summits.
