February Album Writing Month

Have you written 14 songs in 28 days? What are you waiting for... inspiration?

"You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club." — Jack London

This is the club. Each February, FAWM.ORG forges a collaborative community where thousands of musicians of all walks and skill levels write an album's worth of material in the shortest month of the year. That's roughly one tune every other day. "Fawmers" are a mix of music professionals, students, homemakers, and folks who work dayjobs but rock nightclubs.

This Week's Songwriting Challenge: Week 4: Only One Chord

Write a song that uses only one chord for a at least a portion of the song: the verse, chorus, bridge, or (if you are brave) even the entire song! This will force you to think about using the vocal or instrumental melody to make things more interesting, instead of relying on chord changes. Tip: try using chord inversions (i.e., varying the bass note) to give the chord a different feel. Some mostly-one-chord examples: "Run Through the Jungle" (Creedence Clearwater Revival), "Girlfriend is Better" (Talking Heads), "Tomorrow Never Knows" (Beatles), "Joy" (Lucinda Williams), "Early To Bed" (Morphine), and almost anything by Bo Diddley.
