  • LeBron James named NBA Most Valuable Player

    by Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer Reporter
    Monday May 04, 2009, 5:04 PM

    UPDATED: 11:12 p.m.

AKRON -- He's long been a hometown hero, now he's a hometown MVP.

Ten years ago, LeBron James started getting roars at St. Vincent-St. Mary's gym on the edge of downtown Akron. Monday he got one more huge ovation in a moment that can only be described as unforgettably unique.

James accepted the NBA Most Valuable Player Award, which he won in a landslide, on the same floor where he first became a star.

With his Cavaliers teammates and coaches in the crowd -- which was stocked with family members, former teachers, former coaches, longtime friends and hundreds of current students -- James accepted the award with humility. Well, as much humility that can come with arriving at his old school in a Ferrari with a police escort.

But before he got there, he drove through his old neighborhood and took the same route he took to school as a teen. The trip seemed faster this time, almost as speedy as his rise from phenom to the highest individual honor in the sport.

At midseason, the MVP looked like a three-way race between James, Lakers' star Kobe Bryant and Heat star Dwyane Wade. As the Cavs surged to the finish behind James -- who won four Player of the Month Awards to tie a single-season record -- to 66 wins, it quickly became lopsided. James received 109 of the possible 121 first-place votes to record the sixth-largest victory margin in history.

Bryant finished second overall but had just two first-place votes. Wade was third but had seven first-place votes.

At a podium set up right below the state championship banner from his senior season in 2003, James thanked his current teammates and coaches, telling them "this award is going to be like the both of ours but I'm going to keep it at my house."

Then he thanked his longtime friends and former teammates and coaches, especially SVSM coach Dru Joyce. Talking about his team and swearing he wouldn't cry, James also spoke about his admiration for his mother.

"I'm 24 years old and I'm receiving this award, I never thought it would happen this fast," James said. "I never dreamed about being MVP, but if I said I didn't enjoy this award I'd be lying to you. Hard work pays off and dreams do come true."

To show extra attention to his teammates, James gave each a pricey camera in part to signify their "family portraits" that became a staple during the season. But he was quick to remind all of his bigger goals this season.

"I still I have a lot of things I want to do this season," James said. "I want to have another celebration in June."

It was James' choice to have the ceremony at SVSM. Normally players accept the award at practice facilities or home arenas. He will have another celebration before Tuesday's Game 1 in the conference semifinals against the Atlanta Hawks, where NBA Commissioner David Stern is expected to be on hand to give him the Maurice Podoloff Trophy in front of a sellout at The Q.

So the TV trucks lined up along West Market Street in Akron and police directed traffic and dignitaries, business partners and media members got themselves to James' turf, the only place he could imagine getting the award.

"This is where I learned my dreams could come true really, there's not a better place," James said. "This school, I just graduated six years ago, this school helped me become the man I am today standing up here receiving this award."

With the trophy came an SUV from Kia, the NBA annual awards sponsor, which James immediately donated to the Akron Urban League.

"He's never forgotten where he came from," said James' mother, Gloria. "I'm very proud of him, it is long overdue and he's real deserving of it."

Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who spoke to the crowd along with General Manager Danny Ferry, surveyed the scene and then tried to re-name the award.

"The 'P' stands for person, it goes beyond player," Gilbert said. "To a lot of people, he's a most valuable person. He gives to his team, his friends, the City of Akron, St. Vincent-St. Mary; he has given in so many ways."

    Cleveland,

We are witnessing history right before us. This young man from Northeast Ohio is homegrown/talented/ and will eventually save the once struggling Cavalier franchise(maybe Cleveland's economy too).

Congrads Lebron, now lets get the Tribe and Brownies on board because there going down the toilet at an alarming rate.

    MVP!!

See link, its explains why Cleveland is the best city EVER!

YEA LEBRON!! Way to go. This should be your 2nd or 3rd MVP award already, but it's OK, the voters are clueless.

Brian, keep up the good work. You're 100 times better than your predecessor - Branson Wright.

Whoo hoo - LeBron gets a Kia! (I think Kia would just be better off making a donation to a charity of the winner's choice.)

Congrats! And super, super-cool to have it at St. V/M.

    Posted by clefan1 on 05/04/09 at 9:34AM

No big surprise, but congrats to "The Chosen One" King James. While Mo Williams, Delonte West, Z, Andy V. and the bench were huge contributors, Lebron is the leader of this team and so richly deserves the credit for the 66 win season. Now lets get those 12 more wins for the NBA Championship!

    Wine/Gold Sword Wielders,

LBJ has walked the walk when he talked the talk because he truly has lit up Cleveland like Vegas.

LBJ, You have exceeded what the Cavs could have hoped for when they drafted you and for that, now you have made NBA and Cav history once again!!!!!!

You said through TEAM success, will come individual accomplishments and recognition.......well your right again young man.

    GO Cavs08-09!!!!!!

    Congrats LeBron,

that is too funny that he gets a Kia...haha.

Maybe he can give it to his son to crash around the yard in.

Posted by mhploni on 05/04/09 at 9:56AM

Congratulations to LeBron, who continues to spread the BEST lessons learned from sports: hard work, focus, commitment, humility.

Here's hoping that this helps keep him in wine and gold for the rest of his career (as the best were also one-team players).

Posted by LambBone on 05/04/09 at 9:56AM

Why do I think there will be no photos of LeBron trying to squeeze into that Kia.

And what's up with the spamo iulia009?

    Posted by chiefwahoo56 on 05/04/09 at 9:58AM

Well-deserved and just the first of many... now it's time to grab that O'Brien trophy.

A great award for a deserving player.

The best part of all this? I have no worries whatsoever that LeBron will keep his focus on the real prize at hand. Onward and upward.

Posted by jackaroout on 05/04/09 at 10:06AM

MVP locked up, time to get the championship...on a side note, a KIA? That should be given to the least valuable player...or biggest player in the league...Allen Iverson?

Great news, and good job LBJ. My only question is, what the hell is Kia thinking? Do they honestly expect James to roll around in a Kia. That thing will be given away to a friend or a charity before he gets home.

    Posted by maggie1954 on 05/04/09 at 10:18AM

No one deserves it more. Congradulations to him and his team mates, for what they have done this season. I am so proud of Lebron. God Bless.

Did KIA build this car award special for Lebron?
Congrats to Lebron and to his team mates for an exceprional year!! Besides his ball hand, ing, shooting and defense, another HUGE asset of Lebron's is his humility. I have never heard him blurting out at the mouth about how good he is and I can understand the young man when he speaks!

Posted by truaxmj on 05/04/09 at 10:29AM

He has finally earned the award with team success, after years of individual marks but only moderate team achievement.

I will, however, be angry if/when anyone besides LeBron and Dwight Howard gets a first-place vote. I'm looking at you, Wade.

Anyone who is a Knicks fan. LBJ is staying in Cleveland. If the Cavs go on to win the NBA Championship, Knicks fans can forget about LBJ ever coming to New York.

You think because your the Knicks and its New York that you can get just about anyone to join your organization. But the biggest doesn't mean your the best. Do you really think that LBJ would leave a place where he can win two or three championships now as opposed to going to NYC with the hope of winning one (so far down the line).

Here's a suggestion to the New York Knicks. Draft good players, hire a good coach, stop sexual harrassment of female employees and you too can have a winner.

Congratulations LeBron James you have really have shown the city, state, nba, and the whole sports world that we all are witnesses to greatness but as you and everyone else knows this is a great honor but we know what our goal is and that's an NBA Championship and to bring the trophy to the city of Cleveland

He lives life to the fullest and provides the role model for our youth that has long been absent in our society. Congratulations Lebron and thanks for being who you are.

Well deserved lebron, congrats to you. Ive realized that only those players that put everything on the line for their teammates, their families, or the franchise are the true risktakers. there arent many of those in todays sports. It is however, the ingredients to bringing a championship to your city and a hell of a way to build your legacy. Your on the road to supremacy so good luck to you and your teammates keep them focused and prepared for the fight ahead.

    Congrats, LeBron!

You FINALLY are receiving some national recognition for what we Cavalier fans have known for years -- that you are THE most valuable player in pro basketball.

Thank you for displaying skill, toughness, grace and class as you have jumped into a team that was in a losing culture and helped lead the way to not only respectability, but also into the NBA's elite.

You have been able to exceed all the ridiculous hype & expectations that had preceded your arrival into the NBA, and now we are witnessing not only your individual greatness, but also a team and organization that is in a great position to win multiple NBA titles.

I hope you are a lifetime Cavalier who will always be honored as the single most important reason for the Cavaliers rise to an NBA dynasty, and that MJ will be the guy mentioned AFTER you in conversations . . . .

Congrats LeBron! You have shown nothing but class which is refreshing for someone who achieved so much at such a young age. You are to be applauded for setting an example of not expecting anything and working hard to be the best. You are more than the "best" basketball player. You are a quality person.

Hopefully, this is the icing on the cake for the year of the Cavs!

Kosar, geezer Indians, or old fogie Browns players, James is greater than all combined.

Great job LBJ....but none of these MVP's won the NBA championship and the MVP the same year...hopefully that changes this year but...

    2000–01 Iverson
    2001–02 Duncan
    2002–03 Duncan
    2003–04 Garnett
    2004–05 Nash
    2005-06 Nash
    2006–07 Nowitzki
    2007–08 Bryant
    2008–09 James*

Kingfish, Duncan accomplished this in 2003.

He won MVP and Finals MVP in the 2002-2003 season.

    We are all WITNESS to:

    1) a super star who is old school by his unselfish attitude--team is No. 1, not his ego.
    2) a young man who made it though a tough time as a child/young man with the help of the community (foster parents, St. Vincent, etc.).
    3) a man who remembers his roots and friends when few of us given that much money and adulation at that age could act as mature as he does.
    4) the greatest basketball player of all time and possibly the greatest athlete of all time (we will see).
    5) a man that values his family and serves as a good role model for being a father.

Good for you. We'll see if you keep it on after the Finals.

Congrats to Bron he deserved it. He is the best player on the best team...THIS REGULAR SEASON. It remains to be seen if he's ACTUALLY the best in the world as so many of you claim he is.

The city of Cleveland better jump for joy now. Best record in the NBA, HC advantage throughout playoffs, Bron mvp, easy path to the conf Finals...everything is going your way so far.

First off, great job Lebron winning the MVP award. He really did deserve it, not just because of his stats, but because of his off-court actions and his leadership abilities. I love that there are Lakers fans that are still coming on here and bashing Lebron. They are great for a laugh. To all the Cavs fans that come on here and complain in comments on Cavs articles about the Browns and Indians, give it a rest. Who does it hurt that more people comment on the Browns. I love the Cavs as much as annybody, but football is so much easier to follow and be a huge fan of. Those comments just say to me that you are a front-runner that only cares about the Cavs because they are winning right now. You aren't a true Cleveland fan, I am. I will watch every Browns game and as many Indians games as I can, even if they lose every game. The same goes for the Cavs. I bet if the Cavs started next season 4-6 or 3-7 you would all be saying how this team was a fluke and will never win anything again. Either be a real Cleveland fan, or keep your mouth shut.

Posted by emmagoblue on 05/05/09 at 4:31AM

hey, black spam-ba: so what the F--K will *you* do when the lakers lose? start trolling the jai-alai websites? i'm betting you don't even post in fakers' websites. (and the LA times doesn't allow comments just to keep idiots like you from polluting their website.)

let's see what kobe did in response to finishing second? have a big game? no.

he went 1 for 7 from the arc in a EIGHT POINT LOSS!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

and instead of saying: "if i hadn't gone 1 for 7 from the arc" he blamed the defense. what class!!!

the rockets scored 100 pts - while the lakers give up 99.3 PPG. OTOH, the fakers only scored 92 pts - 14 pts below their average.

maybe he can blame that choke on his alleged sore throat.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

And KobeisntMVP, you make me laugh with your stupid comments.

    Posted by monkey24 on 05/05/09 at 8:56AM

    Tkrslam,

The Cavaliers are a first class organization from the top down. The Browns, since they've come back have players that cant play (or wont play), coaches who cant coach and an owner who is more concerned about soccer. So I'm just a smart consumer. If you continue to watch every expansion Browns game, even if they stink...well that's up to you...apparently you have no life. So my advice to you is just shut your pie hole.

    Hey kingfish2000:

The 2002-2003 Spurs were the NBA champions and Tim Duncan was the MVP. I believe the Spurs beat the Lakers in the Western Conference semis that year and broke LA's string of three straight banners. The Spurs later beat the Mavs in the conference finals and then the JKidd/K-Mart/Richard Jefferson nets in the NBA finals. Ironically, every one of the Spurs' series went 6 games that playoffs.

The point of your post -- that MVP's do not have a recent track record of bringing home the championship hardware is a good point, though.

Go Cavs. Over the Hawks in 5.

What does winning it all have to do with the fact that Lebron James earned the MVP award? Cavs will most likely win it all this season. The MVP is an individual accolade, even though team is vital to a players success. Winning a championship? Basketball is a team sport, so the fact that you say HE wins it all is a joke and shows your ignorance. Then again, you are probably an L.A. Rapers fan so what do you know. Did you enjoy the Rockets beating your homeboys last night?

Hmm? Negative? Hell, I'm probably the most positive person on here! People on here (and in general) are so fast to judge people it's pathetic! The top two reasons are, Race and social status. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of some people. So much hatred in people today.

Sometimes people reflect all the negativity in their own lives by tearing down those who have achieved. LeBron is 24 years old. His life's experience and judgment will continue to grow.

Going back to Akron St. Vincent was a class act in my opinion and an example of remebering your roots...and giving his mentors their due.

    Give him his due.

Cleveland sports teams are NOT respected. But we can all share in the pride of this moment.

Thanks to mancalledsun and socalbrnfan for backing up my point about the Browns. Being a Browns fan or an Indians fan doesn't take away from being a Cavaliers fan. It really is a lot easier to make the playoffs in the NBA than it is in the NFL or MLB. NBA is 16 out of 30 teams, 53%. NFL is 12 out of 32, 37.5%. MLB is 6 out of 30(I believe), 20%. the numbers speak for themselves. Plus this year is the first year that the Cavs have honestly really been in contention for the Championship. Give the Browns time. Yes I kno it's been ten years with these Browns, but the Cavs did go 30-something years between division titles so lay off the Browns.

    GO CLEVELAND!!!
