Constituency Profile
However, in 2005, Maria Miller, a former marketing consultant, increased the Conservative majority to 4,680.
At this election, the seat gains three part-wards from North West Hampshire and loses three wards and a part-ward to North East Hampshire.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Situated in the M3 corridor in North Hampshire, Basingstoke is an economically thriving constituency due to rapid development in recent decades.
It has become increasingly urban as hi-tech industries, office developments, and London commuters have made it their home.
Electronics, micro-computing, and security printing industries are based here, many firms have offices in the town, and the AA has its headquarters here. Central and local government are also major employers.
The town's proximity to the M3 and its good rail links to central London and neighbouring large towns such as Reading make it a commuter favourite.
