Elias Says...
SPIRIT OF 76 RETURNS TO PHILLY
Doug Collins, who was named head coach of the 76ers on Friday, was the first overall pick of the 1973 draft and he played his entire eight-season NBA career for Philadelphia. He was chosen for the All-Star team four times and was a member of the 1976-77 Sixers team that lost in the NBA Finals to Portland, a series in which Collins averaged 19.7 points per game. There is no other current NBA head coach who comes close to matching that kind of playing history with his current team. In fact, aside from Collins, only two current NBA head coaches played for the team they are now coaching, and each did so only briefly. Rick Adelman played his first two pro seasons for the San Diego Rockets (the franchise moved to Houston in 1971) and Scott Skiles played his rookie year with the Bucks.
