Image of Chandar the White Tiger

1984

Chandar the white tiger arrived this year.  White tigers are so rare that only about 90 were alive worldwide at the time of his arrival.  He was the fifth generation of the grand patriarch, Mohon, who was captured in India, in 1951.  A recessive gene may cause the blue eyes and white coloration.  White tigers are not considered to be true albino, as true albinos have absolutely no pigmentation.
