Posted by Scott Kegley on August 15, 2010 – 8:10 AM

Are you ready for some football? Football season is finally here as the 49ers will kick off their preseason against the Indianapolis Colts at 10:00 a.m. PST.  You can watch the game on CW 44, Cable 12 or live on NFL Network.

I just set everything up in the press box and just like last year, I’ll try to include a photo from my seat where I’ll bring you live updates from the game.  Stay tuned to the blog all throughout the game!  You can also get all the stats in our game center or follow us on Twitter.

Some of the notable players who will not play in today’s game are Michael Crabtree, Patrick Willis, Brandon Jones, Travis LaBoy, Ahmad Brooks, Phillip Adams and Joe Nedney.

FIRST QUARTER

Ted Ginn took the opening kickoff up the middle, but the Colts had excellent coverage and stopped him at the 16. 1st and 10 from 16, Michael Robinson took the handoff and cut back to the right, fumbling the ball as Antoine Bethea hit it with his helmet. The Colts recovered.

This time it’s rookie Kyle Williams on the kickoff return and the former Sun Devil nearly broke it as he was tripped up trying to bounce it outside.  1st and 10 from the 29, Michael Robinson got the carry once again and mad sure to hang onto it for a 6-yard gain straight up the middle.  2nd and 4, false start by Mike Iupati backs the 49ers up 5 yards.  2nd and 9, Alex smith hit Robinson in the right flat for a nice gain of 8.  3rd and 1, Smith dropped back to throw and barely got the ball away under pressure as he tried to hit Robinson.  Brandon James signaled for the fair catch on the 11-yard line after a 51-yard punt.

Curtis Painter came in at QB.  1st and 10, Bruce Davis was called for illegal hands to the face before Painter’s pass.  1st and 10 from the 20, McDonald wrapped up Brown as he tried to bounce the run wide left.  It was a loss of 2.  2nd and 12, the Colts go backwards again as Jean Francois got into the backfield to stop Brown for a loss.  3rd and 13, Taylor Mays made a nice open field tackle as Painter hit Brown on the screen.  It was a loss of 3 and the Colts will be forced to punt.  Ginn fielded the punt and picked up a couple yards back into Indianapolis territory.

1st and 10 from the 44, Smith remains in at QB.  He scrambled and threw just high of Davis.  2nd and 10, Smith looked to Robinson in the left flat and the ball went off his hands.  3rd and 10, Smith threw for walker down the middle of the field.  The ball went off Walker’s hands and was picked off by Jerraud Powers and returned all the way back to the SF 32.

1st and 10, Brown got the carry but lost 1 yard on the play and time will run down on the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

2nd and 11 for the Colts, Painter hit White who found a hole in the middle of the field for a gain of 20.  1st and 10 from the 13, Brown was stopped for a loss of 1.  2nd and 11, Painter looked for his receiver, but the ball was tipped in the air and picked off by Reggie Smith.  The former Sooner outran everyone down the right side of the field for the TD.

Colts 10 – 49ers 7

Giguere had a nice return for the Colts, taking it 28 yards up the middle before being hauled down.  1st and 10 from the 30, Brown was stopped for no gain by Paymah.  2nd and 10, Brown bounced left and cut up the field but only picked up 1.  3rd and 9, Painter hit White but Smith was right there to haul him down as he raced for the first down marker.  Williams had another nice return to give the 49ers good field position.  They’ll begin their next drive from the Indy 43.

David Carr come into the game, replacing Smith.  1st and 10, Carr hit Dixon on a screen to the left.  the rookie allowed his blocks to set up and picked up 8.  2nd and 2, Dixon bullied his way up the middle for a gain of 3.  1st and 10, Carr couldn’d find anyone open and scrambled up the right sideline.  Zeigler absolutely leveled his man to spring the QB for a gain of 16.  1st and 10, Dixon showed good vision up the right side and picked up 7.  2nd and 3, the Colts plugged up the running lanes well but Dixon was able to cut back and pick up a yard.  3rd and 2, Dixon slipped through a small hole up the middle to pick up the first down.  1st and goal from the 3, Robinson got the carry and dove up the middle for the score to give the 49ers the lead.

49ers 14 – Colts 10

Chris Maragos tripped up Giguere on the return and the Colts will start their drive at the 20.  1st and 10, former Michigan star Mike Hart got the start, but was wrapped up by Brown and Wilhelm after a gain of 1.  2nd and 9, Painter hit White crossing over the middle.  Wilhelm stopped him after a gain of 6.  3rd and 3, Painter hit Taj Smith just beyond the first down line.  1st and 10, Hart hit the hole up the middle for a gain of 11.  1st and 10, Briggs came off the edge to stop Hart for no gain.  2nd and 10, Painter nearly hit Smith, but the pass was just beyond Smith’s reach as he flew down the right sideline.  3rd and 10, Painter threw the ball right to Briggs, who fumbled it on the return.   When it’s all said and done, that play works to the Colts’ benefit as they get a first down.  1st and 10 from the 32, Hart plowed ahead for a gain of 1.  2nd and 9, Painter threw incomplete for Taj Smith.  3rd and 9, Painter hit Hart over the middle and they’ll have to measure.  Hart will be a couple inches from the first down, but Caldwell threw his challenge flag.  The ruling on the field stands and the Colts are charged a timeout.  Painter dropped the ball on 4th down as the Colts went for it.  The 49ers covered Painter up as he dove for the ball.

1st and 10 for the 49ers from the 35, Carr spun and threw a screen pass for Dixon.  Rachal got down field and made a nice block to speak the rookie running back for a gain of 12.  Two minute warning.  1st and 10, Carr was sacked by Angerer for a loss of 6.  2nd and 16, Dixon ran off the left tackle for a gain of 17.  1st and 10, Carr was sacked again by Angerer.  Carr couldn’t avoid the rush again on the very next play and was brought down by Fili Maola.  3rd and 17, Carr’s pass to Hill on the comeback should have been caught, but bounced off the receiver’s hands and was nearly picked off.  Shane Andrus came on and connected on the 37-yard field goal.

49ers 17 – Colts 10

1st and 10, Painter’s pass was incomplete for hart.  2nd and 10, Painter hit Smith on the comeback for a first down.  The Colts took a timeout to stop the clock.  1st and 10, Painter was dropped by Bruce Davis for a loss of 7 and the Colts take a timeout.  2nd and 17 from the 25, Painter’s pass was picked off by Will James and returned to the 32.

1st and 10 from the IND 31, Carr hit Williams on the right sideline as he got out of bounds after a gain of 8.  Carr hit Tony Curtis over the middle and the 49ers will call timeout with just 3 seconds left in the half.  Shane Andrus connected on the 35-yard field goal, giving the 49ers a 10-point lead at the half.

49ers 20 – Colts 10

THIRD QUARTER

James took the return for the Colts and was shoved out of bounds by Maragos at the 25.  1st and 10 for the Colts, Briggs pursued Hart’s run from behind and brought him down as he tried to cut back.  It was a gain of just 1. 2nd and 9, Painter’s pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage by Jean Francois.  3rd and 9, Bruce Davis came with good pressure as the pass was incomplete, but the 49ers were flagged offside.  3rd and 4, Painter’s pass was incomplete and the 49ers defense forces the punt.  Zeigler signaled for the fair catch at the 25.

1st and 10, Dixon ran around the right tackle for a gain of 4.  2nd and 6, Dixon got the carry up the middle and was stopped for no gain.  3rd and 6, Carr barely got the ball away as Eric Foster threw him down.  Lee’s punt was downed at the 23.

1st and 10, Painter’s pass was behind Smith on the slant.  It was a pass Smith probably should have caught.  2nd and 10, Moore got the carry and picked up 7 yards up the middle.  3rd and 3, Painter hit Eldridge for the first down.  1st and 10 from the 41, James ran to the right side and had a big hole to pick up 4.  2nd and 6, false start.  2nd and 11, James get the carry up the middle and picks up 6.  3rd and 5, Painter tried to hit Smith on the slant, but Stoudamire had perfect coverage.  Zeigler fielded the punt inside the 10 and he made some nice moves to get out to the 18.

1st and 10, best run of the day so far by Dixon and he’s had several good carries.  He bounced out left for a gain of 23.  1st and 10, Carr hit Hill for a gain of 27 on a deep cross.  1st and 10 at the 35, the 49ers were called for holding.  Looked to me like there could have been a facemask on Dixon as well.  1st and 18, Carr hit Dixon on the swing pass for a gain of 2.  2nd and 16, Carr hit Zeigler who found a hole in the zone on a post route for a gain of 18.  1st and 10 from the 23, Caulcrick got the carry and picked up 4 behind the right guard.  2nd and 6, Carr hit Nate Byham and the rookie tight end picked up the first down with a gain of 12.  1st and goal from the 7, Dixon ran right and spun back up the middle for a gain of 1.  2nd and goal from the 6, the Colts had several men in the backfield and Dixon couldn’t avoid everyone, going down for a loss of 2.  3rd and goal from the 8, great play call by Jimmy Ray as Tony Curtis was wide open on the right side of the field and raced in untouched for the score.

49ers 27 – Colts 10

James returned the kick to the 27.  It’s now a battle of former Fresno State QBs as Tom Brandstater replaces Painter. 1st and 10, James picks up 3 yards on the carry.  2nd and 7, Brandstater hit White for a gain of 5.  3rd and 2, Brandtstaer hit Giguere for the first.  1st and 10, Moore raced up the middle for a big gain on the play.  1st and 10 from their own 48, Brandstater hit Tamme for a gain of 7.  3rd and 3, Moore got around the right edge and picked up just enough for the first down.  1st and 10 from the 41, Moore found another hole and picked up 4 out to the left side.

FOURTH QUARTER

2nd and 6, Brandstater couldn’t connect with Giguere.  3rd and 6, Brandstater’s pass found Mike Balogun.  To the credit of the Colts QB, he made a nice tackle on Balogun  to prevent the linebacker from going all the way for the score.

1st and 10 for the 49ers from the IND 49, Nate Davis comes in at QB, bootlegs and hits Byham for a gain of 16.  1st and 10, Davis buys time and eventually finds Byham once again for a gain of 24.  1st and goal from the 9, Dixon cuts the run back left and is brought down at the 5.  2nd and goal, Dixon continues his impressive play, stiff arming the defender as he bounced out to the left side and got the score.

49ers 34 – Colts 10

A big return by James was called back for holding and the Colts will start the drive from the 16.  1st and 10, Brandstater was sack by Tukuafu for a loss of 5.  2nd and 15, Moore got the carry and picked up 3.  3rd and 12, Brandstater tried to hit James on the quick WR screen, but the pass was incomplete.  Guillory definitely should have called for the fair catch.  He ended up muffing the punt and it was recovered by the Colts at the 39.  1st ad 10, Brandstater went for the home run to White.  PI on Stoudamire will place the ball at the 3.  1st and goal, Brandstater play faked and found Tamme wide open for the touchdown.

49ers 34 – Colts 17

Guillory returned the kick to the 22.  1st and 10, Davis hits Caulcrick out wide for a gain of 11.  1st and 10, Dixon plunged forward for a gain of 2.  2nd and 8, Davis gives to Dixon on the draw.  Dixon allowed his blocks to set up nicely and picked up 10 straight down the middle.  1st and 10, Davis bought time and hit Kevin Jurovich along the left sideline.  The ruling on the field was a catch as he dragged his toes.  1st and 10, Davis rolled out and hit Bakari Grant for a pickup of 13.  1st and 10, Davis lost the ball as he moved in the pocket but recovered his own fumble.  2nd and 13, Byham was called for a false start.  2nd and 18, Dixon picked up 3 on the carry to the left side.  3rd and 15, Davis tried to get the ball to Grant in the middle of the field, but he was unable to haul it in.  Andrus connects on his third field goal, this one from 44 yards.

49ers 37 – Colts 17

Great preseason opener, don’t worry too much about Alex, the timing will get there the chemistry on the young O-line is still developing, what was very impressive today was Anthony Dixon, kid looked superb and Glen Coffee won’t really be all that missed if that’s what this kid is capable of. our Defense is excellent as usual with the int return breathing life into the team that came out a little sluggish.

i love the game today things were good offense looked great. however i am still dissapointed in our tackling. these throwing your body and feet tackles gotta stop we have to wrap guys up hit them in the mouth and put them on there back too many missed tackles get it 2gether or we’ll give up too many yards after contact.

Smith did okay. He had one bad pass to Davis which was behind him and it was not where it could get INT. Walker has to get to that ball! He did look like he was held though the DB had his hands on Delanie’s pads before the ball got there!!!

i luv anthony dixon!!!! i see alex smith is still garbage, vernon davis had a td. let nate davis start the next game with the starters because he looked pretty good with the 3rd stringers. and please start Ahmad rooks when he gets back on the field. the way manning done us in his two series we still won’t make playoffs, the secondary has to get better, lets go NATE CLEMENTS…time to finally earn your money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well here is my assessment on the Niners today, so far I saw a 8-8 team once again. Alex and the 3 and out kids did not impress me much. Manny at will did his thing. The defense did not do a bad job though. Thumbs up to DIXION, IUPATI, A. DAVIS, CARR, K. WILLIAMS…Thumbs down to ALEX, ROBINSON. I’m sorry but Robinson needs to just stick to the special teams he is not a running back!!. I know it is only preseason so I’m not going to cut up on them too bad, but Alex and the boys have a lot of work to do on offense plus I understand some starters did not play. Dixion looking like a young Gore out there he could be a stud but would like to see what he can do against the best out there so I’m not getting that excited just yet. Was great to see Kevin Jurovich see some brief action I did this player highlight tape out of High School
I am truly happy for him and I know his folks are proud…keep doing your thing KJ!!!

i think the 49ers played outstanding. i jus think smith needs to work more on his pocket presence. if he can do that then i think he will be able to be decent QB that leads us to the playoffs. this is the Year baby! no goin back. were gonna play smashmouth football so watch out everybody here come the 49ers!

Smith.. Smith.. Smith… When Nate Davis FINALLY got in the game, he played exactly like he did in college. He moved well with the ball.. he knew where his receivers were.. he completed passes.. he moved the ball quickly down the field…

The 9ers are going to let this guy go and some other team is going to pick up a good future starter for nothing… and Mike Singletary will be on the coaching scrap pile by then.

I agree with the comment about Alex Smith not seeming to preform on game day. Training camp is one thing, because he does not have the opponents defense trying to take his head off. But this is the pros and he really needs to step up this year. After seeing how well Carr handled the game today I was more impressed with him as the quarterback. He seemed to be comfortable out there and was able to connect on most of his passes. Now I do not want to take away from some of the rookies that played today. They also looked great. I hope that my expectations are not being to high do to the past seasons when they seemed to be going somewhere and then they go down hill. I was born and raised in the bay area and have followed the Niners from when I was about 3-4 years old over 45 years ago. I hope that the Niners are back. Love them Niners and always will.

I’m a long-time season ticket holder in SF but moved to Denver 11 yrs. ago. I just checked the 49er website to see who won the game. I looked at the blogs. I had the same experience as Paula Moore in Iowa nr. DesMoines. I live in Denver, CO area and have Direct TV. I saw in the guide that CBS affiliate channel 212 would carry the 49er game live at 11am. I was thrilled – don’t get to see many 49er games here. I turned on the channel and caught the end of the Detroit/Pittsburg game. Then my screen went black at 11am. I called Direct TV and was told the 49er organization determines what games will be blacked out across the country, probably per their CBS contract. Why a Detroit/Pittsburg game was shown and not the 49er/Indianapolis game is way beyond my comprehension.

How much longer do you give Alex Smith excuses, he is a third string quarter back, Even when he has the time he makes the wrong decision, This guy is a momentum killer.

The pass to Walker was thrown into double coverage with no touch on it, besides he had a man deep with single coverage ahead of his defender, and the pass to Davis was thrown behind him, This guy will lead the team to heartbreak. Another solid defense leaning towards greatness, only to be wasted by a quarterback with five years of excuses.

I TOLD YOU ALL THAT ALEX IS THE PROBLEM ON OFFENSE, LOL
YOU ALL WILL LEARN YOUR LESSONS. I SAY GIVE NATE DAVIS A CHANCE BECAUSE DAVID CARR HAS ALWAYS BEEN SHAKY TOO HIS WHOLE CAREER. YOU ALL WILL LEARN!!!

I AGREE NICOLE I TOLD THEM ALL ON THIS WEBSITE THAT THE DEFENSE IS WHAT IS GETTING US THROGH. NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF TALENT ON OFFENSE BUT IF YOU CAN T GET THEM THE BALL THEN THEY ARE WORTHLESS AND WATCH OUT FOR KYLE WILLIAMS AND TED, AND ANTHONY DIXON. CLEARLY THESE GUYS ARE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE. PUT NATE IN. OKAY SO OUR O-LINE IS NOT READY YET BUT DID YOU ALL NOTICE THAT NATE DAVIS THREW NO PICS AND GOT OUT OF TROUBLE. THAT IS WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO WHEN YOUR LINE IS NOT PERORMING. THIS IS A HIGH AND ADVANCE LEVEL SPORT THAT NO MAN CAN DEPEND ON THE NEXT. AS A QUARTER BACK YOU HAVE TO MAKE PLAYS WHEN THE PLAY CALL FROM THE SIDELINE CRAPS THE BED AND ALEX HAS YET TO SHOW US THIS. BUT AS THE SEASON GOES ON WE WILL SEE. YOU ALL WILL BE AGREEING WITH ME. HE WILL BE ANOTHER BRAD JOHNSON WITH TAMPA BAY THE YEAR THEY WON THE SUPER BOWL. DEPENDNING ON THE DEFENSE TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP AND THEN YOU GUYS WILL BE GIVING HIM THE CREDIT. YOU GUYS NEED TO WAKE UP

We need a new quarterback!!!! I love the 9ers, been a fan since 1969. I don’t understand why Smith is still our first string quarterback. He – - – - – . We’ll never be playoff contenders if he is our quarterback. Sad, but true

Smith did okay. But the line namely rookie right tackle Davis didn’t look that good to me. I mean how can smith go through his reads if some one is always bearing down on him!

Am with boogie , give Nate a shot . 5 yrs and the light still hasn’t come on in Alex’s head. A pro quarterback has a 3 yr improvement cycle if by the fourth year there’s no change in performance then the quarterback is what he is. Defense is solid, its the guy under center who is this team’s Achilles heel . Switch to Nate, if he cant cut the mustard then we draft Ryan Mallet next season(pie in the sky). Make no mistake , the notion if willing a Superbowl with a good defense is dead.

smith sucks.you cant win with him. If you put on waviers nobody would pick him up—he and jamarcus russel could have some codine—by the end of pre-season david carr will have the fans support and singeltary will hopefully bench smith.he was 3 for 9 —37yards—and one interception. he chokes on 3rd downs and will never get us to the playoffs.

I have to agree with the posters who say bring in Nate, He shows the most poise and natural clam at the QB, then either of the two QB’s ahead of him, He shows natural scrambling ability, and most important shows the ability to throw the pass to the correct shoulder of the receiver, unlike Smith who continually throws behind or into the shoulder of the defender, He also hangs receivers out to punishment. As for the rookie linemen, keep them in there, by the start of the season they will either be the beginning of a great offensive line of the future, or on the bench.

How about Nate Davis / Nate Byham connection ! Not just a beefy blocker !!!

Please Please Plase trade Smith. Nate Davis should be given a lagitemate shot at starting. Smith is a bust. 6 years of this guy is enough. He lost his starting position to the 2nd string Lions QB. They are barely in the NFL. Thats the calliber QB he is. If he went to Detroit he would probably be 4th string. Wake up 9ers. I’m tired of defending my team at work when the front office wont let go of the dream that Smith will turn into this awseome QB. 6 years. Enough is enough.

Byham looked good. He blocks hard and can catch. I really like this kid. Pitt didn’t use TE much so there may be some potential for him to be a pass catcher as well. Not to mention he’s a quality young kid and that shouldn’t be taken for granted in this league any more.

I think Nate Davis is still young to take the starting job, but he is going to be great when its his time. I think we need to go out and get a qb. We should have done anything possible to get Mc Nabb when he hit the market. We need to pursue any trade options for Alex Smith. GET RID OF HIM! Take Russell maybe. I think we are going to win the division this year despite him. With a quality qb I think the team gos deep into playoffs and maybe super bowl. Like the moves picking up Westbrook, and dumping Balmer. I dont think Coffee had a place on the team anymore either, Dixon looked great. End of season maybe Eagles let go of either Kolb or Vick, wither would be a huge improvement think Vick would be a better fit because of his ability to scramble.

Hey Charles, If vick came to us that would be a fantasy football wish. That would be a Miami Heat move. LOL but what we really need is one more pass rusher on the D-Line with Justin Smith to put pressure on the quarter backs and relieve stress off of patrick willis and and the secondary so they can focus on there jobs. Nate Davis can do the job. He just needs more reps.
