The Randy Newman
Songbook Vol. 1 (2003)
Live In-The-Studio Best Of
From The Boat's Sept 07 Archives
Many thought this was just a greatest hits album. It is that... but it's actually a set of re-recordings made by Randy, live in the studio with producer Mitchell Froom in 2003. Typically, Newman's material never misses the mark when he's alone on piano - his satire is more biting, his melodies are more naked and his stories are more engrossing. Sounding even more world-weary than when he originated the style, Randy's set list is nothing less than a collection of career milestones. Even a few film scores creep in, as short, satisfying, minute-long themes. There's nothing extraneous here - not even an audience - just Randy's lovable cynicism, his raw beauty and his amazing dancing piano. Links in Comments
