What is an internet database and why would you want to have one?
The following links provide insights into the advantages and disadvantages of web databases:
Considering a Database Driven Site?
". . . If you store all of your content in a database you can access it from any page on your site by typing in just a few lines of code, you can sort it and display lists of it automatically. If your site is an article site and you have a separate page for each article, totaling a few hundred pages, you could instead enter the articles in a database, make less than 10 template pages, and greatly lessen your workload from then on. . . ."

Adding a Database to your Site
Benefits, Drawbacks, Availability, Selection, etc.
". . . A good database can provide your site with an efficient and flexible mechanism to store information. This may be information about your products or services or it may be information that you collect from users via the site. A primary benefit of a database is that your data is stored in a manner that allows for efficient data sorting and retrieval. Complex queries and statistical analysis may performed relatively easily when data resides in a database. . ."

Open Source
". . . When testing databases, remember that they're usually designed for particular applications. A database that performs well for one type of system (such as storing airline reservations) may be unsuitable for a different purpose (like displaying a catalog). It's unfair, and unrealistic, to generically compare databases without considering their underlying design philosophy. . ."

Steps Involved with Internet Database Development
The
HOME page lists the
seven (7) basic steps of creating websites and these apply to database driven websites as well. Special attention must be given to the following concerns:
Step 2 - Requirements Analysis
A backend database must be selected (eg. MySQL) and a server side scripting language must be selected.
Step 4 - Host Selection
The host you select must be able to create for you an instance of a database (of the type you have selected above) and must have the scripting language installed (of the type you have selected above).
Step 5 - Development
The scripting language must be properly embedded in your html web pages to provide for the exchange of data between your web pages and your database.
