Graham Island

Graham Island lies within the centre of the Norwegian Bay region (see panoramic image) of the high Arctic zone, forming part of the Queen Elizabeth Islands group. To the east and southeast (46 km and 38 km, respectively) the southwestern corner of Ellesmere Island forms the major landmass adjacent to Graham Island. Other neighbours include Axel Heiberg Island (54 km to the north), North Kent Island (40 km to the south), Devon Island (80 km to the southwest) and Cornwall Island (46 km to the west).

At 1,378 km² in area, the oval-shaped Graham Island measures 55 km in length and 37 km in width. From its low coastal margins the interior of the island slopes smoothly to an upland area — highest in the southeast — where a maximum height of around 175 m above sea level is reached. Prominent in the image is the valley of the Rancher River (lighter-coloured), winding across the island to the north coast (left side in the image).

Immediately off the southwest coast from Graham Island is the small (137 km², 15 km by 11 km) Buckingham Island, with its peak of Mt. Windsor rising to 150 m above sea level.
