ROTA

It is one of the signs that make up the papal signature. It consists of a cross inscribed in two concentric circles, thus forming four quadrants inside. Starting from Pasquale II (1099-1118), in the four internal quadrants there are the names of the princes of the apostles (Petrus | Paulus) and the pope’s name (for example: Paschalis | PP. II). The outer circle bears the pope’s motto (for example, for Pasquale II: Verbo Domini coeli firmati sunt). Inside the external circle of the rota, the pontiff might insert single autograph signs. The rota is also found in the consistorial bulls.
Rota by Leo IX (1049-1054), Innocent III (1198-1216), Paul III (1534-1549)
