Guide to successful lobbying visits

OVERVIEW: Participants in Washington will gather at 10 AM Thursday Jan. 20 at the Dirksen Senate Office Building’s basement cafeteria (called the North Servery located on the northwest corner of the building). You can enter the building at the corner of C St & 1st St NE Washington, DC 20002 [Map]. CLICK HERE to RSVP.  There will also be a 2 PM shift, and there will be  volunteers present in the cafeteria, with a sign to identify them, from 9:30 to 4:30  PM.

Lobby Day will also take place at local Senate and Congressional constituent offices around the country. Use Congress.org to find the Senate or House district office in your area, call them to set up an appointment, and use our tools to announce the event.

You don’t have to be paid to talk to your representatives in Congress. These offices in Washington, and in towns and cities across America, were built for us. Our representatives are elected by us to do the business of real people; not just the bidding of monied interests. You will find that the staffers are thrilled to receive constituents representing themselves, lobbying for themselves and For the People, instead of hired guns paid for by hyper-partisan think tanks, corporations, or special interest groups. Each team will have a leader with lobbying experience, and each participant will receive training materials and an overall game plan.

The purpose of these meetings will be to establish a collaborative relationship and a common goal to pass campaign finance reform legislation and other measures to limit corporate influence on American policies. Invitation / Vision The members of the group will be crafting letters to Congress, planning Lobby Day events in Washington and in towns and cities across America, and recruiting volunteers to write letters and attend meetings in Senate and Congressional offices.

Lobby For the People Online Collaboration

Please our Shared Purpose Collaboration Group at which we will be crafting letters to Congress, planning Lobby Day events in Washington and in towns and cities across America, and recruiting volunteers to write letters and attend meetings in Senate and Congressional offices. The letters we write, post, and share will inspire others to write similar letters, and become a sounding board for Letters to the Editor we will send to newspapers across the country.

How it works: The goal of the “LOBBY for the People” group is to

  • Recruit people across the country to write letters to the Representative and Senators and upload them to this group page.
  • Visit district offices during the week of the For the People Summit (if they are not coming to DC).

Here is how you can use this group to collaborate with a team of volunteers from across America:

  • Join the Shared Purpose group
  • Use the “My Groups” button in the left column to sign in to the “LOBBY for the People” group. A green box at the top of the page will say, “You have signed in to your group.”
  • Check the “Forum” for current projects and strategy discussions by clicking on the “Forum” button at the top, center.
  • Click on the “Documents” button (also top, center) to upload the letter you plan to send to your Senator or Representative. This will serve as an inspiration and reference for others, and an idea factory for talking points. Or, you can ask for feedback on your letter.
  • The “Documents page” will give you access to collaborative documents, such as tips for effective lobbying visits to Congressional offices. You can create your own versions of these documents if you have experiences to share.
