Rodarte Originals vs. Rodarte for Target

Rodarte-opener.jpg

Target’s newest Go International collection, designed by Rodarte sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy from California, will launch in stores and online on December 20 to the delight of fashion mavens everywhere. The 55-piece collection is an eclectic mix of dresses, knits, and accessories in a variety of patterns, textures, and prints. The Mulleavy sisters said the line was inspired by the leading ladies in their favorite Hollywood movies, which seems only appropriate, considering design duo’s fan base of young starlets such as Emma Watson, Keira Knightley, and Kirsten Dunst.

When the collaboration was first announced, this summer, many wondered if a mass-market collection would translate well for Rodarte—after all, the designers are known for their handmade details and unparalleled craftsmanship. But the Target looks seem to draw inspiration from a number of Rodarte originals, meaning shoppers can snap up style on the cheap (every piece in the Target collection retails for less than $80, whereas Rodarte pieces usually run from $3,000 to $11,000). Herewith, a preview of ensembles from the collection, plus photos of celebrities wearing similar Rodarte originals.
