  • You've Been Spotted!

We've been in the process of trying new things for GameSpot community news and our YouTube Spotlight channel lately. And, well, frankly, not many people have been excited about the weekly report based on your comments. So, we're considering some changes for the weekly report, but until our new community news plan is determined, we've got this new video segment for you to check out.

First, let me explain why it's a bit different! We've decided that in addition to maybe a video segment for GameSpotters in the near future, it was time to bring a broader approach to all of our fans in other areas of the Internet. So, we've got Twitter followers who aren't even GameSpot members, Facebook followers who don't use GameSpot, and obviously lots of YouTubers who haven't registered on GameSpot. We don't want to exclude them, but we also want to make sure we highlight you all as well, and that's where Fuse shout-outs come in!

Go check out our first episode of You've Been Spotted on the GameSpot Spotlight channel and let us know what you think! Also, don't forget to accept the challenge about a better caption for Team Joker! You can post it here or on YouTube.

This week we will be having not one but two Community Game Nights!

    Counter-Strike: Source and Minecraft

The first up is Counter-Strike Source (PC) on Wednesday, August 10, at 5:00 p.m. There will be a chatroom open for discussion, and we will be releasing details on the map and server IP the day of the game in the chatroom. Word around the office is that Ryan MacDonald plans on joining us for this night of awesome frag fun. So for your chance to take on Mac himself, be sure to get those mouse fingers warmed up. You can find more information about the Game Night here.

The second game is one that has GameSpot editor Sophia Tong enthralled. If the "Diary of a Minecraft Blockhead" wasn't enough, now we will be having a second night dedicated to Minecraft in all its pixelated glory. Friday, August 12, at 5:00 p.m. we will be kicking things off with GameSpot editor Sophia Tong, GameSpot Community, and more! Click here for additional information and discussion.

UPDATE: Participants of this game night will receive a Minecraft achievement. Sophia also updated her blog to share how new players can get in the action tonight. Check that out, and don't forget that this weekend the Minecraft peeps have buy 1 get 1 free offer happening! So buy your game for tonight and give a gift code to a friend!

UPDATE 2: Sophia said she'll post the IP in the comments and in the chatroom as it gets closer to game night time! Also, here's the chatroom!

For more details on these and other Community Game Night details, check out the Community Game Night union.

FINAL UPDATE: The weekly report isn't happening this week, but we'll be sure to update you on some cool things happening early next week.

Today, in addition to our special episode of On the Spot, we are having our live stream of the EA press conference at 1:00 p.m. PT. What might you expect to see and hear from this epic coverage? Well, awesome info on games, of course, but we don't spot and spill, so we're going to keep it a secret. You're just going to have to watch today's episode to find out.

As for our regularly scheduled On the Spot episode, we will be shooting live at EA's campus, and you can expect to see games like NHL 12, Sims 3 pet, Madden NFL 12, and much more! We here have been made privy to some information about a few surprises that EA has in store for you Spotters.

We are also having a special community activity as a part of this week's episode of
    On the Spot.
What games do YOU think are the secret surprises that will be on the stage show?
Too easy? Well, how about the sequence they appear in?
While watching the press conference might help with what some of those surprises are, we are challenging you GameSpotters to see if you can guess the order of the game lineup during today's episode of On the Spot.

Submit your answers via a Private Message to GS-Community to keep your answers to yourself. Those who have the best guess as to the OTS game lineup for the live show at EA's campus by 4:00 p.m. PT just might get a little goodie...maybe even two.

Important note! No entries will be accepted after 4:00 p.m. PT, so make sure you stay tuned and keep those eyes peeled for your chance at some GameSpot goodies.

    Games' Day in Court: VICTORY!
The six-year debate on violent video games finally comes to a close this week. For more information about the bill, the battle, and the win, check out this detailed report.

Pretty in Pink Activity, Last Call
Last week, in honor of Pink Day, we featured a community activity known as "Who Looks Pretty in Pink?" where we pushed many GameSpotters' knowledge of games. Some felt it was easy, some would disagree with that statement, others needed a hint or two to finish their entry. But no matter what category they fell into, one thing is for sure. If you were able to impress the community managers by answering enough correctly, you would be awarded the new "Pretty in Pink" emblem! This activity will be going on until July 7, so if you haven't had a crack at this trivia, it is not too late! Head here for your chance to earn this spiffy new emblem and prove that you know who's pretty in pink.

    The Council of Unions
A new union has surfaced in the community this week. One that is centered on the union system itself. The Council of Unions stands for the union community and focuses on providing union support, posting union features and events, and discussing union-related topics. Its long-term goal is to be the base from which unions may grow. It believes that unions need to express their needs for a revamp, and those who are interested can discuss unions and what can be done to improve them.

This week's Member Spotlight shines on Gelugon_baat for his wise-cracking though extremely insightful take on how to argue in a civil manner here at GameSpot.

Have you been having issues with logging in? Is your password not working properly? Do you have problems with your email when using Fuse or other community features? In today's tip, we are pointing out that if these problems apply to you, then creating a new account will not solve your problem.
What you should do is go to GameSpot Support and use the moderation drop-down menu to contact the community managers directly. While this might not be a moderation issue, it will still flag your case to the proper staff to handle the situation.

The game night celebration on June 22 for Quake's 15th celebration went pretty well. We'd like to give you another chance to celebrate Quake's 15th birthday with a little activity in the game night union. • Tonight's Game Night - Quake

The legendary Quake turns 15 years old today. This game pretty much goes back to some of the greatest first-person shooters out there. Did you know that modifications were some of the coolest things back then that have spun off games you have come to love and adore? If game developers didn't allow modifications, we probably wouldn't see games today like Team Fortress 2 and Counterstrike. So, let's remember this game for its rich community by playing tonight! We'll explore modifications if we can get them to still work, share memories, watch some machiima videos from way back then, and more. and much more. So tell us what you'd like to try out and we'll continue to play to our heart's content!

We'll start playing around 4 p.m. Pacific time tonight. Fun times will be had with the free and full version of the game. If you'd like to get in some practice and download the freeware version early, drop by nQuake http://nquake.com/. Here's the chatroom link, which requires the latest java to be installed.

Share your experiences in the comments if you played before or if this will be your first time playing the game.
