Published posthumously in 1786, John Curry's Review of the Civil Wars in Ireland is an extensive and balanced look at a time of enormous turmoil in Ireland. Curry was a highly regarded medical doctor, he was also a very insightful scholar of Irish history. Tracing his own ancestry back to the O'Corra family, his family took an active role in Irish political affairs. His grandfather was killed at the battle of Aughrim commanding a troop of horse in the army of King James. Having been bared from studying at the University of Dublin because of his religion Curry moved to Paris to study medicine, before returning to Dublin to practice.

The book itself is split over two volumes. Volume one begins with the state of the country and its inhabitants from the time of Henry II. Covering several insurrections, the Spanish invasion, the condition of the country at various stages, the flight of the earls, the enforcement of the penal laws, the Irish parliament, the surrender of the earl or Ormond and volume one finishes a Ormond prepares to the country.

Volume two begins with Ormond's return and the peace of 1648, which was followed by the arrival of Cromwell in Ireland and the end of the Confederate wars in Ireland. Volume two concludes with the Williamite-Jacobite war and the surrender of Limerick.

Following the conclusion of this part of volume two there is another long section on the State of Catholics in Ireland which is followed by lengthy appendices.

For anyone wishing to learn more about this period of Irish history this is a very valuable publication.

The Fifth Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records of Ireland, 1873 The Fifth Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records of Ireland, 1873

Previous to the establishment of the Irish Public Records Office (PRO), by an 1867 statute (30 & 31 Vict., c. 70), Ireland's public records were located in a variety of repositories throughout the country. Many of the records were perilously stored in unsuitable conditions, and on the opening of the PRO, records were progressively transferred to the new repository, for safe keeping. Each year, between 1869 and 1920 (and less frequently thereafter), the Office published an annual report, known as the Deputy Keeper's Report, which detailed the records received, and the work undertaken, during the previous twelve months. Though little known, these reports can contain useful source material for the historical researcher. Although the reports were usually brief, they often contained copious appendices, which can be especially useful. This is particularly the case, bearing in mind the destruction of the PRO during the Irish Civil War, so the Deputy Keeper's reports now often represent the only record of lost primary source material.

This 5th Report of the Deputy Keeper of Public Records in Ireland was published in 1873. Much of the report is concerned with the status of transfers and classification of various records. Tables are included detailing the numbers of pieces "received and deposited" in the Record Treasury of the office of Public Records. This is followed by two larger scale layouts covering the State of the Bays in the Record Treasury. The appendices of the 5th report cover the following items:

· Extract from the Report of John Overend on the Records of the Courts of Queen's Bench removed from the Dome of the Four Courts

· Reports from the Ulster Keeper of the State Papers

· Extract from the report on the records of the Palatinate of Tipperary

· Resolution of Dean and Chapter of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, to place their records in the Public Record Office.

· Circular to District Registrars of Court of Probate

· Correspondence as to records at Cloyne

· Letters as to a series of specimens of National Manuscripts relating to Ireland.

Calendar of the State Papers Relating to Scotland, Vols. 1 & 2: 1509-1603 Calendar of the State Papers Relating to Scotland, Vols. 1 & 2: 1509-1603

These volumes span over 1,100 pages and list in detail archives held in what was then the Public Record Office London (now the National Archives in Kew). The catalogue covers two major groups of records. The first are diplomatic correspondence between England and Scotland or other interactions between these two sovereign states, their agents, officers and spies. The second are papers concerning the captivity and eventual execution of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Scotland, at this time, was as foreign a place as France to the English. It was difficult to get to and generally hostile. There are numerous papers concerning the regular border incursions and outright invasions by either side, as well as much on the religious convulsions spawned by the Protestant reformation.

These volumes are an essential source for the study of these islands insofar as Scotland and Scottish aristocrats were as much a meddler in Irish affairs, as England was in Scotland.

The calendar was produced by Markham John Thorpe, and published in 1858. For the study of Scotland it represents one of the more important archival resources available.

Edited by Thomas Hill, the Registers of Bramfield, Co. Suffolk cover the years 1539-1596 and 1693-1889. The preface of the book explains the missing years with the loss of the second book or registers, but the editor does attempt to fill in the gaps from other sources which adds greatly to this volume as source for Bramfield. The preface also includes many other useful snippets of information including lists of Churchwardens and some financial accounts.

The actual records of the registers themselves make up the vast bulk of this publication. There are approximately 3000 baptisms, 1000 marriages and 2000 burials included here. The burial registers are also noteworthy for the lengthy description of the dispute between John Pryme and the Vicar over the issue of payment of dues. Pryme was excommunicated but later a reconciliation was reached. The publication is completed by a 23 page name index.

For any one with family connections or an interest in Bramfield, Suffolk, this is a vital publication.
