Several of you have pointed out that there was a mistake in today's Update, item #16, "A caution about new Kel-tec pistol for non-CHP holders."

Since the Kel-Tec PMR30 shoots RIMFIRE cartridges, the restrictions on loaded guns having more than a 20-round magazine in the gun in certain localities DOES NOT APPLY.  Only centerfire guns fall under that law.

Sorry for the confusion - there is no problem carrying that gun openly without a CHP in Virginia.

BREAKING NEWS!

Liberty University (LU) has just changed their firearms policies to be more in line with the University's name.  Not perfect by any means but most definitely a whole lot better!

The timing is interesting:  VCDL is in the middle of its Operation Campus Safety campaign AND I will be speaking at the University on December 5th (I'll be speaking at the new College Constitutional Conservative Christian Coalition club meeting).  Probably a coincidence, but interesting nonetheless.

Liberty is a private university and is not bound by the recent Supreme Court decision nor the Attorney General Cuccinelli opinion on CHP carry on university property.

The new policy allows guests with CHPs to store guns in their vehicles or to have them outside buildings, but not carry them into the buildings.  Faculty, staff, and students can seek permission from the LU PD to do the same.  LU PD can also authorize certain faculty and staff to have guns inside buildings and stored in a secured container in their office.

Also, students, faculty, and staff with or without CHPs will now be able to store their guns with the LU PD.

Here is the announcement.  I see one possible mistake:  in the list of universities that allow students and others with CHPs on campus - University of Virginia doesn't fit that mold exactly.  If they are referring to just "others" with CHPs carrying outside of buildings, then UVA is valid, as would be any public university or college in Virginia.  Currently CHP holders who are guests can carry inside the buildings of most public universities and colleges in Virginia, regardless of any school policies to the contrary.  The exceptions are VCU and GMU.

VCDL applauds this important step forward by LU.  That stands in stark contrast to UVA and some other universities, which are rushing to take a step backwards.

EM and Firearms Attorney Mark Matthews will enlighten us on how to legally purchase Class III items without having to ask permission from your local law enforcement staff for each item!  Join us to find out about setting up a revocable trust for the purpose of owning these items.  Mr. Matthews has said that he will also field some other firearms-related legal questions.

We will begin with a pot-luck dinner, followed by the meeting.  You do not need to be a member of VCDL or RRPC to attend; in fact, we encourage you to bring your friends!

VCDL Executive Member Ed Levine made arrangements with Serbu Firearms to receive a BFG-50 to be given away to a lucky VCDL member at Lobby Day on Monday, January 16, 2012!!!

"That's not a gun.  THIS is a gun!"

The Serbu BFG-50 is a .50 BMG single-shot rifle which weights 22 lbs, has a 29.5 inch barrel, and is 51.5 inches long.  The barrel is made of match-grade alloy steel with a 1:15 twist.

The gun has a highly effective "Shark Brake" muzzle brake, and AR-15 trigger and safety, a custom hammer, a spring loaded firing pin, a Picatinny rail, and a bipod!

It has a parkerized finish with a trigger pull of 4 lbs.
