The fourth quarter of 2011 brought intense rivalry between Apple and Google's mobile platforms, most notably with the introduction of the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
A new report from Nielsen has been released, revealing that iOS experienced and considerable bump over the holiday season in comparison to Android.
In December, 44.5% of new smartphone buyers picked up an Apple iOS device, up from 25.1% in October. More than half of the December's iOS customers bought an iPhone 4S.
Android held 61.6% of new purchases at the beginning of the quarter, dropping down to 46.9% in December.
Overall, Android still retains a dominating lead in the smartphone market, with 46.3% of smartphone owners using Google's operating system over Apple's 30% share.
Stateside, the Apple iPhone 4S was released on October 14, 2011; the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was made available on December 15, 2011.
