Koch Island

Koch Island is located at the northern fringes of the Foxe Basin, situated off the western coast of Baffin Island. The island lies opposite the entrance into Baffin Island's Steensby Inlet (at top edge of the above image) and 14 km southwest from Jansen Point on the Nuvuit Peninsula. Its immediate island neighbours include Rowley Island (at bottom edge of the image) situated 10 km to the south across the Labrador Channel, Jens Munk Island (at left edge of the image) 28 km to the west, and Bray Island (bottom-right corner) 33 km to the southeast.

Koch Island (458 km² in area) measures 41.5 km in length, orientated northeast to southwest; maximum widths vary from 15.5 km across the northern sector to 5 km in the south. Terrain is low and featureless — with much of the island rising to just 10-20 m above sea level. Elevations are slightly higher in the far southwest, where elevations of up to 40 m above sea level are encountered. The landscape is often covered in areas of sand and other loose materials — particularly in the south (light-coloured areas in the image). Very flat plains and small lakes characterise the landscape of the northern half of the island.
