The kiss that says the Queen and Camilla are closer than ever (and has she even lent her daughter-in-law one of her trusty brollies?)

  • Two embraced warmly as they met at Windsor Horse Show earlier today
  • Said the Queen only 'grudgingly' agreed to marriage of Charles and Camilla

The Queen and Camilla have not always shared the best of relationships.

Over the years, the love life of the monarch's eldest son has caused her no end of trouble.

Divorce, infidelity rumours, scorchingly embarrassing phone calls made public... It is no wonder it was said before Charles married Camilla in 2005 that the Queen had agreed only 'grudgingly' to the union.

But today, the Queen and her daughter-in-law looked to have buried any hatchet as they met up at the Windsor Horse Show. Indeed, they looked genuinely delighted to see each other.

The two embraced warmly when they encountered one another at the equestrian event today, with Camilla leaning in to proffer a kiss to the monarch.

No matter that this was an air kiss that barely grazed the Queen's hood, the smiling faces of both belied the affection that is seemingly growing between the two.

Camilla, dressed in a beige trench and carrying a tan snakeskin bag, even held the same sort of transparent birdcage umbrella the Queen has favoured for years.

Whether the monarch lent Camilla the brolly, handcrafted by East End London firm Fulton, or whether it was Camilla's own is unknown - although the black-trimmed umbrella is the same one that Camilla carried on for the rainy day of the Jubilee river pageant last summer.

The Horse Show, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, was set up in 1943 to raise money for the war effort. Still going strong now, it is a chance for breeders the world over to gather and display their horses.

Jess Hayle posted "At least out of the mess we got William and Harry -we could do worse and have President Bliar and his .. wife." In a republic, we choose / vote for who we want, from a list of suitable candidates. People would only vote for Blair if they wanted to. In a republic, we have a choice. With an inherited monarchy, we have NO choice. We're stuck with the next Windsor; whether she or he wants the job; whether or not we want them. The queen may have stuck to the rules but Charles won't. He'll interfere all the time; lobbying for his pet projects; trying to veto legislation he doesn't like; trying to get more money even though his income now is at least £18 million a year and probably a lot more. This man charges people £100 to have lunch and see round his garden! AND he sells biscuits! You say you hope that queen lives a long time - why? Don't YOU want Charles either? But that's how an inherited monarchy works. It won't skip to William - and he doesn't even want the job.

piper 2011 oxford , united kindom - Ok I agree, so it was adultery. Most divorces are due to one or the other spouses finding someone else but we don't go around slagging them off? I don't condone it of course but Diana & Charles were so unsuited it was ridiculous. They had absolutely nothing in common & should never have married in th first place. However, I still say that Charles has the right to be happy & Camilla & him are complete soul partners. I for one wouldn't mind a happy & in love King & Queen.

Don't praise Camilla, Charles will sulk.

No monarchy has any reason to exist in the modern world - the institution simply does not belong. It outlived its justification long ago, so it should simply go away. Would all those people who support the concept please explain to me what it has to do with democracy? You can't? I'm not at all surprised.

What's that saying about keeping your friends close but your enemies closer? No the Queen is a canning old girl .....she knows what game Camilla (and Charles) are trying to play and neither she or the British public are fooled.

A BRITISH poster, delightful1 posted "Who cares about the queen? she live life in luxury off peoples taxes. we pay for her clothes, food, house. etc, yet we are told to respect her when she doesnt respect her people. we all live in the recession, whilst she lives off our taxes..." An America, arikato Orlando posted "Yet you did care to whine negatively about her as though she's one of your many fellow citizens who lives on welfare, doesn't work, serve, or care about your country. I'm just wondering what will you do to right what you percieve to be wrong about her and go about changing it....." I'm amazed American get so involved in British royalty when their own country elects its head of State and salutes the flag not a person. Americans can comment but they should accept that we British put up with the Windors day to day and fund their activies. OUR comments count more than THEIRS. P.S. Anyone unhappy with the monarchy can join the growing Republic Campaign (see us on facebook)
