Katy Perry was forced to restart a performance of her hit Roar after a mistimed backing track revealed she was lip syncing.

The embarrassing moment came as the pop star performed during the NRJ Music Awards in Cannes on Saturday night.

Having bounded onto the stage in a shiny blue mini dress, Katy embarked on an energetic dance routine while belting out her catchy tune.

But almost immediately it became obvious that the 29-year-old was not singing the same track as that being broadcast to the cheering crowd.

Instead Katy and her backing dancers were obviously reacting to a different part of the track.

In a video released via LiveLeak.com, after 52 awkward seconds, a smooth-talking well dressed French man hopped onto the stage, gesturing for Katy to stop dancing, then for the music to be cut.

'If you don’t mind, we can restart. We had a little problem with the sound,' he tells an awkward looking Katy.

'I’m sorry to stop all your energy - I prefer you to be the best.'

Katy agreed to restart the track again, darting off the stage with her dancers before giving a second energetic performance.

This time her singing was obviously live, with Katy performing without a backing track.

The organisers of the show released a statement claiming a 'bad soundtrack' disrupted Katy's performance.

Writing in French they explained: 'Katy Perry sang live during the NRJ Music Awards in Cannes on Saturday night, but unfortunately a bad soundtrack was accidentally launched, taking over the live performance of Katy at the beginning of the delivery tube of the Roar.

'TF1 and NRJ present their apologies to Katy Perry… for this technical problem beyond our control.'

Laughed it off: Katy gamely restarted her show; the organisers later apologised and claimed responsibility

But her stupid dumb fans will carry on buying her records *unconditionally*. She is ghastly, cannot sing a note in tune, I get more harmony from my cat after a sachet of Whiskers.

A lot of big stars have to rely on lip synching. Whatever is recorded in the studio can't come close to being duplicated during live stage. Especially when singing their biggest hits. Most stars don't even write their own material. Look on how many of them have backing dancers. That helps keep the audience from paying too much attention to the singer. In the end the fans are happy and the stars are rich. But these stars lack one thing. Being known as an artist.

Why not just sing live? It's what she gets paid for

That's because like the rest, she can't sing, has no musical talent whatsoever, and her 'music' is just computer generated noise.

This has been happening since the beginning of time, this is nothing new. We all know they can't sing without some sort of help

For whatever reason she's never been able to sing live, she either lip syncs or shouts her way through her performances. It's such a shame because she has great songs and she's good at being a popstar. Don't get me wrong she can sing, her songs rarely have autotune or vocal manipulation. It's just something about loud live music that makes her go all out of tune and shouty.

I love KP!! I love her laugh and her sense of humour but WOW ts been a bad week in Katy Perry land! A less than crap live performance on the X Facter, that humiliating cringe worthy song with her slime bucket boyfriend and a lip sync disaster which was probably meant to save her blushes because she sounds terrible live, made her look even worse. If I were the pretty little bundle of delicious~ness that our KP is... Id dive under my duvet and wait for the rest of this week to pass by! Hugs for her! :)
