Nvidia introduced the Tegra K1 mobile processor during a CES press conference Sunday night that promises to further blur the lines between mobile gaming and the traditional platforms of consoles and PCs.
The Tegra K1 sports 192 GPU cores and will come in two different versions. The first is a 32-bit version, powered by a quad-core 4-Plus-1 ARM Cortex A15 CPU, that will arrive in Android devices during the first half of 2014. The 64-bit version, powered by a customized dual-core CPU based on the ARMv8 architecture, will debut during the second half of the year.
The processor supports DX11 and OpenGL 4.4 graphics which puts it on par with the PS4 and Xbox One in terms of features available to developers while also offering more power than the PS3 or Xbox 360. That means that, while powerful for a mobile processor, there's still a gap between it and the next-gen consoles.
However, Epic Games CEO and co-found Tim Sweeney says, "We can take absolutely anything that runs on PC or on a console and run it on Tegra. The differences between the platforms is really blurred."
As proof, Nvidia demoed several Unreal Engine 4 demos from Epic Games running on the Tegra K1 showcasing features such as reflections, lighting and more.
