Penelope Cruz sports heavy fringe as she wears another hairpiece on the set of new drama... before removing it to reveal pinned brunette locks

By Jason Chester

She was given a radical tomboy makeover as principal photography for her new film began in Madrid, but her closely cropped new hairdo was well hidden while Penelope Cruz idled on set this week.

The 40-year-old actress is currently shooting Spanish language film Ma Ma with an entirely Mediterranean cast in her home country, with Penelope playing Madga -a mother who battles to confront and overcome tragedy.

Taking a short break on Thursday, she showed off another new look while chatting to cast and crew-members.

Complete with a heavy fringe, the shoulder length wig she sported while dressed as her central character was in stark contrast the pixie cropped variation she wore earlier in the week.

Madga’s look was completed with a snug fitting black dress and matching leather jacket, heels and raunchy fishnets.

Penelope later filmed an exterior scene for the forthcoming film before making her way back to her trailer, where she removed the wig and changed into a breezy ensemble.

With her brunette locks tied in a loose, messy bun, she looked tired and content as she made he way towards a waiting car.

Penelope recently admitted that she is planning to move away from acting and in to production.
She told Variety: 'I want to build what could be my future in cinema, not always being in front of the camera.

'I'd also like to direct a feature, maybe 10 years from now. For now, I’m directing commercial and video-clips; I love that.

'And it’s the best way to learn. I want to go slowly, step by step. I’m following the whole production process very closely, from the film’s inception.'

The star is working with director Julio Medem on the movie and admitted she was 'bowled over' by the script.

She said: 'A few months ago, Julio gave me the script over lunch. I read it that night and was just bowled over.

‘It’s one of the most complex, most beautiful characters I’ve ever been offered, the most difficult. Some films take years to come together, Ma Ma has come together very fast.'

One of the things I like about her looks are that they are HER looks .. she is not one of those blonde Hollywood women who are practically interchangeable .

I prefer Salma too, I think she is the most beautiful woman in Hollywood. However, Penelope is gorgeous as well and I love her look.

She is so beautiful with her hair scraped back. I don't think the fringe suits her at all.
