It's a story that does exactly what it says on the tin. Nintendo is teaming up with Mercedes-Benz to give Mario and chums shiny new GLA to bomb around the tracks in. Needless to say, that go kart made of warp pipes is beginning to look a bit silly now. Check out the insane trailer below...
UPDATE: Mario Kart 8's Mercedes-Benz DLC is now officially coming to Europe and North America! More like Mercedes WHENZ it coming out... Right? Summer. It is coming out in summer.
Well, er, that was something else. What do you make of that readers? Is this Mario's first step towards being a more serious Forza-type sim? And do you want to see the DLC land on our shores?
Still on the fence about getting Mario Kart 8? Why not let our free digital guide help convince you? It's found inside the ONM app, which you can download for free here. Just tap on the Mario Kart 8 supplement inside and off you go! (Non-UK residents can download the supplement from the Edge app.)
Whaaa
Well....
This kind of announces (to my perespective) that there will be more DLC for MK8 as well as I seriously doubt this will be only set of DLC.
I gather it's free.
Agreed, this opens the doors to all kinds of possible DLC like more retro tracks!
It is.
Good to know there's hints of more DLC in the future.
Still hope for Diddy! But that Mercedes just looks so out of place compared to the other karts. Also, that Mario looks class!
Ok then...
Best advert ever?
If they release it here and it's free... Yeah, why not? It looks pretty weird which is what I like. And if it fits my Acceleration + Handling style of play, then even better.
I wonder if it'll come with a proper hang glider...
I like the fact that Mario is driving a car is confusing people. Yeah, throwing shells and banana skins while driving underwater is fine but driving a CAR?! forget it!
Nah, I'm kidding. It's just a nice little extra for cross promotion. Looks nice. No complaints.
That was ridiculous.
Will this DLC be available in Europe?
The kart looks really out of place to me in those screens. Still, can't complain at free DLC.
worst advert i have ever seen
Wait....what did I just witness....I don't even.....Has mario turned into a petrol head? So funny.
I don't really know where to begin with this curveball from Nintendo.... Its a free dlc and while you don't have to use the car its presence just seems out of place in the fantasy world of Mario Kart. I seriously doubt this is going to be coming out in the west considering Mercedes is perceived as a luxury brand here, partnering with the zany world of Mario would be a strange move from the marketing team. While Nintendo did say it would be more free with its licensing this seems shoehorned in and very cynical. As much as I want Nintendo to be financially successful watching Mario drive this car past me online will make me feel a bit sad.
Aaaand the world is a better place...
To be honest Id be more supprised if we dont get it. Mercedes is a German company which is European sooo...
Its a good DLC for the car I guess, well one way of advertising (take note nintendo). But I hope it doesnt happen with many more real life cars...
It is good to see that DLC will be available for it. I have a sneaky suspicion that if we do get DLC of characters, they'll come out in 'sets' of like 3 and you'll have to pay for them. Though if its one at a time and free, Id happily welcome that =D
As plenty of car adverts are shown every day on almost every channel, this would be a strange but perfect opportunity for Nintendo to increase advertisement in the UK. It'll just serve as both ultra strange fan fiction and nightmare fuel
I wonder if they will do this sort of thing in the future?
as for now, more Mariokart8 DLC coming?
This is such good news! Ive been hoping for mk8 dlc, or some official indication and now we finally have it! The game hasnt even been released yet! Only one day to go, and knowing theres dlc for the game nintendo are probably going to blow us away with some massive dlc thing for mario kart 8 at E3. MARIO KART 8!!!
Revoltingly irrelevant product placement? Is this the shape of things to come in Nintendoland? Are McDonalds going to start offering hamburgers as alternatives to Super Mushrooms? No, I don't have to use it, or download it (in fact, if Japan keeps exclusively, I won't even be able to), but it still undermines the game's credibility as a... just a game. It now has another role as a platform for profit-driven, shameless corporate promotions.
In similar news, Linkin Park recently did an angry song about corporate irresponsibility, greed for profit, and general inauthenticity of purpose. They then removed the original music video and replaced it with one encouraging the listeners to play some unrelated music action game, which I assume was the result of some sort of deal to get the game promoted.
Advertising is getting ever more invasive and pervasive, and 'entertainment' is just tending towards one giant ball of interconnected gunk. And all this at a time when revelations on the scale of civilian privacy intrusions are coming into focus. Why can't games just be games, songs just be songs, and cars just be cars? Because that's not as profitable as them all being the same thing, and part of the same thoughts.
I'm sorry, I needn't feel there were enough vaguely paranoid, semi-anti-corporate grumblings on here. And all for something that hasn't even been confirmed on this continent. But still, it's the principle. Grumble grumble grumble grumble.
LOL how Mario looks HARD and then gets thwarted by the Goomba.
Seems a bit unNintendo to be advertising anothers business/products in their games. Hope we don't see too much of it. I do hope we get more DC for MK8 though, and all the better if its free!
In a way, Nintendo have done this sort of thing before. Cast your minds back to the announcement of Mario Kart 7 in America and you may remember that Nintendo of America got L.A. Customs to make them two functioning karts for the announcement (I kind of hope that one day I will make enough money to buy my own one, but I highly doubt I could drive it here in the UK). I know it's not exactly the same, but think how now you could buy the Mercedes-Benz featured in the DLC, cut the roof off down to the doors and, there you have it, you actually have a kart featured in the game!
More characters, more tracks & more cars what could be better?
All that stuff included at the beginning, for free. That would be much better. If a group of developers have finished a game, they should give themselves a pat on the back and move onto something else. I don't like the idea of people hanging around and tinkering with what was supposed to be a finished product - at least not in traditionally structured game like Mario Kart - Little Big Planet and similar games I might let off the hook. I want to feel that the game I'm buying on release day is the complete package, and can be judged as such. I don't want a game reviewed, and then five months later find that the game I'm buying isn't the one I've read about.
Perhaps I'm overly nostalgic and luditish, but I used to see games the same way I'd see books; the sum total of people's attempts to create a single, finished product. I don't want books rewriting themselves on the shelf, and I don't want most games doing it either. And I certainly don't want Mercedes shamelessly shoehorning their way into either of them. Grumble grum.
(rubs eyes) what in hell did I just watch, the live action part is messed up, especially that goomba, just look at it's face. I can only begin to imagine what was going through the director's head when he created this monstrosity.
It looks so out of place, but it does look really nice.
Hopefully it'll come over here, with DLC coming out, hopefully it means more characters.
As you can see, the wheels in the commercial and the ones in the screenshot look almost identical. And with that, we are getting a new cart AND wheels.
november it is them
Just give us some proper DLC please Nintendo! I LOVE Mario Kart 8 but I'm increasingly finding myself getting bored with the limited number of game modes...
That is the difference between you and me, my friend. Best advert ever created by man!
Epicness... and genius.
