Why It's Bad Fandom Etiquette To Put Other People's Fics On Goodreads

Obligatory disclaimer: I don’t speak for every fanwriter in fandom, but I do know for a fact that I speak for several of them.

Books and fics exist in different contexts….

So I had no idea this was a thing that happened. Apparently I already have a Goodreads fucking author profile, and it’s got one mediocre fanfic I wrote eons ago on it. The first long fic I ever wrote and I know it’s got massive pacing issues.

I am not particularly pleased by this.

My work is on there too, and I didnt put it there. I’m not thrilled about it, tbh.

yup, happened to me as well and i’m equally un-thrilled. there’s some really important points made in the posts above. and tbh i don’t really understand why some ppl have the urge to post fic to GR in the first place. i mean it’s sweet that some ppl want to share the fics they’ve enjoyed, but that’s what fic rec pages etc are for.

and in my case the person who put my fic on GR wasn’t even a fan, really. they remain the only reviewer, who gave my fic 3 stars btw, and charmingly said that it’s ‘quick, easy to read and forgettable’.

and don’t get me wrong, i have no problem at all with ppl criticising my work - if i did, i wouldn’t be putting it online in the first place. but i just wanted to add that within fandom, it’s considered common curtesy to direct such comments at the author personally? maybe? like, if you purchase a published book, obv you post reviews online etc. but ff authors are usually very present online and there’s a million ways to contact them. or if you comment on someone’s fic WITHIN fandom, then the author is also likely to see it. but to just quietly put someone’s ff on some form of official page and leave such a comment just kind of struck me a bit, i suppose. esp because i stumbled across it completely by accident.
