Pictured: Tunisian skipper bites his nails alongside Syrian 'trafficker' as they return to

Tunisian skipper Mohammed Ali Malek appeared on edge and deep in thought (left) on board an Italian rescue vessel moments before being arrested when he stepped onto Sicilian soil last night. Before leaving the ship, however, he was forced to watch the bodies of 24 victims (right) being taken off the ship for burial on the Italian island. The 27-year-old (pictured, inset, after his arrest) was later charged with multiple manslaughter as it emerged he mistakenly rammed his vessel into a Portuguese-flagged merchant ship that had come to its rescue. Prosecutors say that as a result of the collision, the migrants shifted position on the overcrowded boat, which was already off balance, causing it to overturn. Malek's alleged smuggler accomplice, a 26-year-old Syrian crew member named as Mahmud Bikhit was also arrested and charged with 'favouring illegal immigration'. Witnesses yesterday told how women and children died 'like rats in a cage' after being locked into the boat's hold by callous traffickers in Libya, while survivors clung to floating corpses until coastguards came to rescue them in the dead of the night.
