'The odd dress-up day is fine with me': Pearl Lowe defends the decision to allow her nine-year-old daughter appear in a new ad campaign for Marc Jacobs

Being sat in a make-up chair, dressing in fancy clothes and posing for a high-end ad campaign all feature high on many young girls' wish lists.

But putting them on a pedestal at a young age and allowing them a taste of fame can also be a dangerous game to play.

But it is a gamble that Pearl Lowe, the mother of the nine-year- old star of the latest Marc Jacobs ad campaign, has decided to take.

The fashion designer and former singer-songwriter has now defended her decision in a new interview with this weekend's Sunday Times Style Magazine, claiming that her daughter Betty is unlikely to be affected by the fickleness of the fashion industry.

When Peal's old friend, the stylist Katie Grand, called to ask about her daughter appearing in the new Autumn/Winter campaign for Marc Jacobs, the 45 year old agonised over the decision with her partner and Betty's father Danny Goffey.

But the pair finally decided on agreeing to the two-day, all-expenses paid trip to New York because they didn't want to 'sap her dreams.'

Betty has long had her eye on a job in showbusiness, despite only being nine years old.

The primary school pupil has designs on becoming an actress, regularly accompanies her mother to fashion shows and is reported to idolise her older sister - the model Daisy Lowe.

It isn't her first modelling job either, Betty appeared in an advert for a children's website called Alex & Alexa as a young girl and recently featured in an article for i-D magazine about children of rock stars.

In fact, it was this article that convinced Katie Grand to suggest Betty for the Marc Jacobs campaign.

The new pictures of Betty in the campaign were released by Marc Jacobs on his Instagram account a few weeks ago.

The release comes at the same time that Dior was criticised for sending a 14 year old model down the catwalk during their Autumn/ Winter 2015 show.

But Pearl believes that her decision to allow Betty to take part won't affect her daughter and maintains that she would never allow her to take part in any adverts deemed too risqué.

She told Style: 'In this case, the campaign featured an eclectic group of characters rather than professional models - Danny and I would never allow her to take part in a campaign that was in any way provocative.

'The clothes, despite being from the adult collection, were far from being age-inappropriate or sexualising -  in [one] photograph, she is pictured wearing a polo neck and a long skirt that fell far over her little legs; in another she is wearing a pair of large geeky glasses.'

Pearl adds that as Betty's friends are too young to read fashion magazines they were mostly unaware of the fashion shoot and didn't even mention it to her daughter on her return from New York.

She also said that she won't be encouraging her daughter to follow herself and Daisy into fashion and instead hopes that her daughter will choose a career as something like a doctor or a lawyer instead.

She added: 'The odd dress-up day is fine with me, so long as she tidies her room, does her homework, doesn’t miss school and it doesn’t let her little head get big.

'I’m secretly hoping that Betty might pursue another career path [to acting], but in the meantime, she has made a little money, which Danny and I have squirreled away for the day she does announce she wants to go to medical school.'
