Kerry Washington was certain to make her sophisticated character from Scandal proud when she stepped out in an outfit that was befitting of the role.

The 38-year-old turned every head in an elegant blue crop top and coordinating skirt when she attended the Disney ABC TCA Summer Press Tour in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.

Her dark styled down in loose curls, the mother-of-one let her natural beauty shine with strategic touches of makeup.

Glossy pink lips and full lashes heightened her famous face, and she also matched her jewellery with her outfit.

The actress glammed up the look with a pair of sky blue tear drop earrings, while finishing off the ensemble with black peep toe heels.

Once inside, Kerry sat beside Scandal executive producer and creator Shonda Rhimes, as well as fellow actresses Viola Davis and Ellen Pompeo.

All three leading ladies star in Shonda's various hit-making television series.

During the panel, Shonda addressed why she had decided to axe one of her most beloved characters, Dr. Derek Shepherd, who was abruptly killed off in a car accident in Grey's Anatomy.

'The decision to have the character die the way that he did wasn't a difficult one in the show,' Shonda said, according to Deadline.

'Either Derek was going to walk out on Meredith and leave her high and dry, but then that would say that the love wasn’t true over the last 11 years of the show.

'That would be untenable... He couldn’t be the bad guy and walk out. The only way to make Meredith and Derek’s magic remain true was to keep it frozen in time.'

Meanwhile, producer Pete Norwalk added there would be a few major surprises in store for How To Get Away With Murder fans.

Love story: Shonda admitted 'only way to make Meredith and Derek’s magic remain true was to keep it frozen in time'

Speaking of the characters, he said: 'We're going to reveal a lot more about their backstories, how they met each other, what dark, twisted things happen to them in the past which now made them the people in the present,' he said, according to Entertainment Weekly.

'That's what we're super excited about in the writers' rooms, is coming up with fresh, new storylines for these people that you think you know at this point in the show but you don’t know them at all.'

As for Scandal, Shonda provided a few details on the upcoming fifth season.

'Everybody else was in a fairly blown apart place...We pick up right there in that environment and we see what's happens next,' she said, according to the website.

All three hit shows will return to ABC in September.
