Emotional comeback: Justin Bieber broke down in tears after his performance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday
Showing a much deeper side to himself, the star bent over double overwhelmed by emotion as the crowd erupted following his performance.
The 21-year-old is often pop's biggest brat, but it was hard to not be touched as he tried to cover his face as he teared up before breaking into sobs on stage.
That is unless you are host Miley Cyrus, who decided it best not to break with her script and awkwardly flirted with the still crying star telling him to call her 'when he's legal'.
Too much for him: Showing a much deeper side to himself, the star bent over double overwhelmed by emotion as the crowd erupted following his performance
Revealing moment: The 21-year-old is often pop's biggest brat, but it was hard to not be touched as he tried to cover his face as he teared up before breaking into sobs on stage
Like no ones watching: The 21-year-old, while he tried to cover his tears at first, lay himself emotionally bare in front of the millions of people watching
Bad jokes and tears aside, the Baby singer impressed with a stripped back but still high energy performance.
Dressed just in black with a baseball cap on, the star kicked off his set looking a lot like he was just rehearsing.
Obviously confident in his singing and dancing abilities, the star started with the Skrillex and Diplo track Where Are U Now? which he features on.
No tricks: The Baby singer impressed with a stripped back but still high energy performance
Here we go: Obviously confident in his singing and dancing abilities, the star started with the Skrillex and Diplo track Where Are U Now? which he features on
He's got this: Keeping up with the professional dancers, the singer showed off his quick feet and vocal abilities
Justin first sang by himself before some male backup dancers exploded onto stage.
Keeping up with the professional dancers, the singer showed off his quick feet and vocal abilities.
Then it was really his time to shine, with the singer turning the energy yo even more for his new single, What Do You Mean?
Learning to fly: As he sung the final verse, the star was lifted into the sky where a voice over told his fans to have faith
Up, up and away: The hire wire act was really the only bit of stage magic the singer utilised in his performance
Symbolic: As he laded, the star was all alone yet surrounded by thousands of people
Supported by some female backup dancers, Justin continued to give the performance his all.
As he sung the final verse, the star was lifted into the sky where a voice over told his fans to have faith.
Perhaps reflecting on his recent attempt to overcome his past bad behaviour and dedication to Christianity, his voice over said that 'life is a journey... [and] when you fall it allows you to get up'.
Deep: Perhaps reflecting on his recent attempt to overcome his past bad behaviour and dedication to Christianity, his voice over said that 'life is a journey... [and] when you fall it allows you to get up'
Showing their support: Those in the audience did their best to make the star feel better
Waterworks: With those words still ringing in his head, the star touched back down on stage and that is when the tears started to flow
A journey: The emotional set was very different to his last pop-tastic performance at the VMAs in 2010, where he sung a medley of first big his Baby, Somebody to Love and U Smile
With those words still ringing in his head, the star touched back down on stage and that is when the tears started to flow.
The emotional set was very different to his last pop-tastic performance at the VMAs in 2010, where he sung a medley of first big his Baby, Somebody to Love and U Smile.
There could also be no doubt that the singer is trying to move towards a more authentic sound as the 21-year-old's vocals were a little breathless at times - thanks to his frenetic dancing - proving he was not lip syncing.
For the fans: Sunday was the first time the star has performed at the ceremony in five years
Striking a pose: The 21-year-old was not lip syncing but did not stop dancing through the medley
Not the best response: Host Miley Cyrus decided it best not to break with her script and awkwardly flirted with the still crying star telling him to call her 'when he's legal'
Another slightly more superficial thing that has come a long way since when he last hit the VMAs stage is his hair.
The Canadian born star rocked a new 'do on the red carpet that was nothing like his old bowl cut.
The pop star's locks were styled with a long blonded floppy fringe at the front and the rest of his hair pushed back.
Changing it up: The Canadian born star rocked a whole new look for the red carpet - most noticeably his hair
Not a winner: The look certainly is not for everyone with his new cut featuring a long blonded floppy fringe at the front with the rest of his hair pushed back
That's not it: The singer appeared to be trying to find his good side , trying different poses on the carpet
The night was certainly a big one for the star as not only did he return to the VMAs stage after the awards wrapped he had another surprise up his sleeve.
Just two days after releasing the lyric video for What Do You Mean? Justin Bieber dropped the full video for the song.
The gritty video also stars John Leguizamo and sees the star kidnapped by masked men and getting saucy with love interest Xenia Deli.
