But after trying to fight the dog off for around a minute, Davis used his own 9mm pistol, which he was legally carrying, to put a bullet in the pit bull's head. And even after being fatally shot, it took a while before the dog released its victim.

Close-up pictures of the British Airways plane that caught fire in Las Vegas yesterday appear to show that one side of the engine exploded (left) before belching burning fuel over the wing and fuselage. The casing of the engine appears damaged on only one side, with the metal bent outwards, suggesting it blew open towards the aircraft, spraying the plane with shrapnel. Around 14 people had to be taken to hospital after the incident yesterday, which saw the plane catching fire on the runway (inset) as it prepared to take off.

The shocking video was caught on a camera phone by a farmer living in the Chinese province of Sichuan, who watched the snakes battle it out for ten minutes. The man said that the white bellied rat snake appeared to be winning at first when it bit the smaller reptile on the back, but the king ratsnake quickly turned the fight around before swallowing its enemy whole.
