She sparked concern when she sported a drastically thinner frame following her return as a judge on The X Factor in July.

But according to The Sun on Sunday, an undisclosed family heartache is the real reason behind Cheryl Fernandez-Versini's recent weight loss.

It's been claimed that the 32-year-old has been making regular trips between her North London residence and her family home in Newcastle to try and deal with a continuing drama.

'Cheryl's been going through a great deal of stress recently and has been left very upset over this matter,' a source told the publication.

It's claimed the unknown drama has left the star feeling run-down, which could have resulted in her shedding the pounds.

'She has chosen not to publicly address the situation but rather maintain a dignified silence and get on with things,' the insider dished.

The former Girls Aloud star has adopted a busy schedule since returning to the singing competition earlier this year, though she has still been making the time to visit her family in her home town.

Cheryl's weight loss has also been linked to the death of her father-in-law earlier this year, with the star vehemently denying that her shrinking frame is deliberate.

'It should be illegal; for people to attack others over there appearance,' the pretty brunette wrote in July after being viciously branded 'a bag of bones'. 

'You have no idea what I've been going through, just losing my father-in-law and everything that comes with that.

'Have some respect and think before opening your mouth,' she added.
